Capital District Championships-Out of State Standouts

The Zero Gravity Capital District Championship event was mainly made up of teams from New York. However, there were also teams from Massachusetts, Vermont, and across the border from Canada, all of which had their share of talented players. Here is a look at some of the top standouts from outside of New York state.    Sara Mazariegos came across the border from Canada and took the Zero Gravity event by storm. Mazariegos, a lefthander, was one of the best shooters in the tournament. Mazariegos shot a very high percentage from behind the 3-point arc, especially from the foul line extended. She is a high-IQ player with outstanding court vision. Mazariegos is very good at breaking down the defense off the dribble to score or dish to teammates. She is also a strong rebounder and defender.     Kailey VonHandorf is a player who draws eyes to her right away due to her aggressive style of play. Out of Massachusetts, VonHandorf has a motor that is always running at high speed. She drives to the basket with fearless power. VonHandorf often draws contact, getting herself to the foul line, where she is a very good shooter. She can get to the bucket and finish with either hand. VonHandorf is also a strong defender and shot blocker. She is a tireless rebounder.     Another player from Massachusetts who was impressive all weekend was Jenna Weeden. Weeden played a supporting role during Hopedale's run to a state title this winter, but is a prolific scorer for Take Charge AAU with a 40-point game on her stat sheet. Weeden is a superb ball-handler. She can get to the basket and finish with her left or right hand. Weeden is a streaky shooter, but can catch fire at any moment. She has an unlimited range beyond the arc. Weeden is also a disruptive on-the-ball defender.     Simply put, Reagan Shea is a superior athlete. Not only does Shea excel on the hardwood, but on the lacrosse pitch as well. Shea averaged over 13 points per game for Hoosac Valley during the high school season. She is an outstanding outside shooter, connecting on 38 3-pointers and finishing with 284 points during her junior campaign. Shea is an excellent ball-handler with a strong drive to the bucket. She plays with a lot of hustle and desire, which coaches will love. Shea has keen court savvy, which makes everyone around her better.     Charlotte Lajoie is a true point guard. Lajoie is always dribbling with her eyes looking ahead, whether in transition or a half-court set. She has tremendous court vision and a keen sense of the game. Lajoie is a solid ball-handler who drives strongly to the basket. A polished Euro step is her signature move. Lajoie runs the floor well to finish in transition. She is also a talented shooter from the perimeter and the midrange.
