It can, in some aspects, especially in basketball. Size can make a world of difference. One thing a lot of us fail to realize because we can't see it is the size of someone's heart. Sure, size helps with playing, but it doesn't substitute for the will and determination of a person. Being a hard worker who is willing to go the extra mile, that matters. Being that person who just competes with energy and effort. That matters. In Tennessee, we have those girls who can be impactful because they have heart and are willing to do whatever it takes to help their team win.

Gritty kids. Individuals who just show up and compete. That is what basketball is all about. Sure, taller kids have an advantage, but if a kid who comes out, sizes up their competition, and goes to work, I want that kid in my corner because they are going to find a way to win. During the travel ball season, people tend to focus on a kid's size. They focus on a kid with a high-scoring output. Yet, we as individuals fail to realize or pay attention to the kid who just gets after it and competes. We overlook that glue girl. The kid that play with their heart and uplifts their club by doing the little things right and giving their team extra possession.

During the upcoming live period, pay attention to the kids who aren't just doing the scoring because of their size. Look at the kids who are playing with a lot of heart. They are the ones who are selfless, do the little things right, and are out there showing that their style of play goes beyond just the scoring column. Sometimes it's not just the scoring aspect of the game that gets you noticed; it's the other intangibles or little things that college coaches value.

Size may matter, but don't just look at a person's frame. Judge their energy and effort. Those are the girls who are going to get the coach's attention. Here are a few girls who I expect to get noticed by the way they play the game.

Energetic slasher who contributes on both ends of the floor. She has a unique scoring ability to change speeds to attack the rim. She can also pull up for a mid-range jumper and knock down the 3-ball. What sets her apart from most is her defensive ability. She can utilize her frame to cause disruption. She gets steals, deflections, and rebounds well. She is a player who is on the come-up, and coaches will take a long look at her all-around game.

Yes, she is big in stature, but it's not how she plays, which is so impressive. This kid is a hard hat kind of girl who wants the basketball. She can score inside the painted area at a consistent clip, but it's her ability to rebound the basketball that truly does stand out. She wants to rebound the ball almost just as much as she wants to score it. I am talking about double-digit rebounds in the teens and twenties. That type of effort right there is next level, and though she is still young in her high school career, she's going to be playing at the next level based on the type of output she gives.

Her game continues to grow, and coaches are taking notice of her style of play even more. She is a heady floor general who is as selfless as they come. She can score from multiple spots on the floor, but it's her ability to be an effective PG that can distribute the ball and make it easy for her teammates to score. She can attack and kick, or attack and dump to a low post player; she makes the read, and the ball gets out of her hands. She plays poise under pressure and truly is someone you could build a team around. This kid loves the game, and you can tell based on the way she gets after it.

A determined individual who is starting to turn some heads. Her game has risen over the year as she has added to her bag. She has expanded her range, learned how to use her frame to muscle through people, and really has turned it up on the offensive end. Her calling card has been her ability to get rebounds and make opponents shoot tough shots. That's what has gotten her noticed and is something she hangs her hat on. She's a kid who is going to bring it, and her team feeds off her energy and effort.
