Big North Shootout: Impact Players

The Big North Shootout is a team camp that's been around for 21 years. Taking place in beautiful Petoskey and Boyne City, this event brings quality teams and prospects to beautiful Northern Michigan year after year. Director Ray Kimball does an outstanding job running the event, and it's an event I look forward to covering, not just because it happens to take place in a resort town. There are always hidden gem prospects to be found from under-the-radar teams, and this year was no different. Daly is a freshman ready to make an immediate impact in the backcourt. She worked hard to pressure guards on the perimeter and ripped the ball away clean at half court, then raced the other way for a fast break bucket. Daly went by for speedy drive-by layups, earned trips to the line, and showed her outside range by sinking a wing three off the catch. She used a pocket dribble, shifted into high gear to drive by the first defender, forced the help side to commit, then made a great extra pass to an open teammate for the assist. Daly has a strong build and moves her feet quickly with an athletic stance to stop dribble penetration. She used an effective spin move in the low post to get the scoring angle and finished with a nice baby hook over the defender. Daly had a solid day for Menominee at the Big North Shootout.     Elaina was a two-way playmaker for Petoskey at the Big North Shootout. She was relentless on the defensive end, jumping passes on the perimeter and reaching in with quick hands to create many steals. Elaina drained a wing three and immediately looked to push in transition after securing defensive rebounds. She scored a speedy straight line drive from the top of the key and used a quick crossover to get by the defender, then switched to her off hand for the finish. Elaina deflected a pass on the perimeter for a steal and motored up the court to finish a fast break layup. She has the ball on a string and changes directions on a dime. Elaina used a shifty inside-out crossover hesi combination to split the gap, then scored the contested layup in top gear. She chased down rebounds on both ends and used an effective pivot to score a floater in traffic. Elaina has sharp instincts. She defended a screen perfectly to deflect the pass away from a roller and had sharp instincts in the gap.     Reese is a long and talented guard prospect from Menominee who stood out at the Big North Shootout. She can slash to the hoop or make teams pay for leaving her open on the perimeter. Reese split the gap on a quick drive for a layup and buried a corner three. She moves to open space, catches to shoot, and is very confident from beyond the arc. Reese caught a pass, went by a defender with a hard rip move, and drove straight to the rim for a bucket. She blocked a shot with emphasis on the defensive end, secured the rebound, pushed the ball up the court using long pushout dribbles with both hands, and finished with a sweet fake-pass move at the rim. Reese drained another corner three and attacked with a burst for two more points off the dribble.     Ryann had a very productive day for Menominee at the Big North Shootout. She showed off her hops, leaping up to snatch an offensive rebound, then scored with a nice inside hand finish. Ryann caught a pass in the corner, balanced her feet, and swished the three with a smooth stroke. She hustled to chase down a layup attempt from behind and blocked the shot. Ryann pushed the ball in transition with an extra gear and used an effective pivot to score a contested bucket in the paint.     Madelyn is a strong, skilled, and physical forward who gives Menominee an edge in the paint. She was very impactful for the team at the Big North Shootout. Madelyn took one power dribble and went up strong to score a contested layup. She caught a pass with soft hands to score another layup and forced the defense to put her on the free-throw line. Madelyn battled through fouls to secure an offensive rebound and scored a strong reverse through contact for the and-one finish. She drove to the basket with determination, intercepted passes from the help side, and muscled through contact to score strong layups. Madelyn's toughness, high motor, and ability to convert difficult shots stood out.
