Fresh Talent: DMV Freshmen Make Their Mark

The DMV Freshman Showcase gave us an early look at some of the young talent ready to make their mark on the high school basketball scene. With players from across the area stepping onto the floor, several freshmen stood out with their skill, athleticism, competitiveness, and confidence. While they are just beginning their high school journeys, these young prospects showed flashes of what could make them names to remember in the years ahead. Here are some of the dynamic freshmen who caught our attention.    There weren't many players in the building who could match Cirina's size and strength, and she took advantage of that from the start, beginning with the 3-on-3 games. When she got the ball in the paint, she was nearly automatic, especially with shooting fouls counting as scores. She used her physicality well around the basket and also showed a nice touch inside, connecting on a smooth hook shot.     Braylin made plays throughout the showcase, displaying excellent ball-handling in the process. She used her crossover and counter moves effectively to get to her spots on the floor and finish at the rim. She also shot the ball well from beyond the three-point line, making her a threat at multiple levels. Defensively, she created several scoring opportunities by forcing steals and turning them into transition layups.     Dream played with high energy and made her presence felt with a number of hustle plays. She finished well through contact and attacked the offensive glass hard, creating second-chance opportunities and scoring on putbacks. Defensively, she did a good job jumping the passing lanes, using her anticipation to come up with steals and create opportunities in transition.     Ryan was a late entry, playing only in the final game, but she quickly injected excitement into the gym with her personality, energy, and play. While she had the advantage of fresh legs, she looked like the best player on the floor and was nearly unstoppable offensively. She was a threat to score every time she touched the ball, getting to the basket at will while also shooting the three very well. Despite her ability to score, Ryan didn't dominate the ball and continued to share it with her teammates. She communicated well on the floor and played under control, showing an impressive combination of confidence, skill, and feel for the game.     Doriyan was active moving without the ball, finding openings in the defense and finishing off the cut. When she got into the lane, she played under control and didn't force bad shots. At 6'0”, she also showed the ability to handle the ball in the open floor, going coast-to-coast in transition and finishing at the rim.
