PGH MI Freshman Showcase: Team 1 Evaluations

The 2030 Freshman Showcase brought together a talented group of prospects for a full day of competition and exposure. Players had the opportunity to showcase their skills in both 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 action, giving our scouts plenty of opportunities to evaluate them in different game settings. The showcase also provides valuable media exposure, with coverage from our scouts reaching thousands of views on X and our written evaluations giving players another way to get their names in front of the basketball community. One of the things that makes the Prep Girls Hoops showcases unique is that every participant receives coverage in our articles. My coverage at this event focused primarily on Teams 1, 2, 7, 9, and 10. Once play shifted to 5v5, the Team 1 guard showed her ability to create off the bounce. She has a quick first step that allowed her to get downhill and put pressure on the defense, while also showing nice touch with a floater in the lane. She used a hesitation dribble at the top of the key to freeze her defender before accelerating past her and getting into the paint. Her change of pace paired with her quickness made her difficult to keep in front.     Whitney is a guard for Team 1 who showed different pieces of her game throughout the 5v5 action. She connected from behind the arc, showing her ability to stretch the floor. After securing a defensive rebound, she immediately pushed the ball up the floor with her head up, looking to advance the offense in transition. Around the basket, Whitney also displayed good footwork, using her steps well to maneuver through traffic and create opportunities to finish.     Zanijha is a bouncy, athletic guard for Team 1 who showed plenty of versatility with the ball in her hands. During 3v3 play, she did a nice job keeping the ball wide and protected on her drive before finishing at the rim. In 5v5 action, Zanijha displayed a strong handle and a shifty change of direction that helped her get downhill and create off the bounce. She showed touch with a floater in the lane and knocked down multiple step-back threes, creating the separation she needed to get clean looks from behind the arc. Her combination of quickness, athleticism, and creativity off the dribble made her a tough matchup.     Madison is a guard for Team 1 who made plays on both ends of the floor. Defensively, she showed active hands and stayed engaged on the ball, creating a tie-up with her effort. On the offensive end, Madison attacked the basket and finished through contact for an and-one at the rim.     Sophie is a guard for Team 1 who showed her ability to impact the game in several ways. During 3v3 action, she made a nice read in the pick-and-roll, delivering a well-timed pass to her teammate. In 5v5 play, Sophie consistently found success from the mid-range, knocking down jumper after jumper, while also connecting on multiple shots from behind the arc. She contributed on the defensive end as well, coming up with a block on the perimeter.     Gracelyn is a forward for Team 1 who brought a strong presence on the glass while also showing some range. During 3v3 action, she stepped out and knocked down a three from the wing. In 5v5 play, Gracelyn was active on the offensive glass, coming away with numerous second-chance opportunities. Defensively, she consistently found a body and boxed out, helping her control the boards on that end as well. She also showed her ability to see the floor with a great pass in transition and added another three from behind the arc.     Ella is a guard for Team 1 who brought energy and playmaking on both ends of the floor. During 3v3 action, she blew by her defender and extended for a tough scoop finish at the rim. In 5v5 play, Ella displayed excellent court vision and high-level passing ability, consistently seeing openings and delivering the ball to teammates. Her quick first step allowed her to turn the corner and get downhill in a hurry. Defensively, she competed hard and was scrappy, hitting the floor multiple times for loose balls. Ella also rebounded well from the guard position and stayed active on the offensive glass, converting several putback opportunities around the rim.     Elaine is a post player for Team 1 who made her presence felt around the basket during 5v5 action. She was active on the offensive glass, pulling down numerous rebounds and creating extra possessions. Elaine also showed good fundamentals in traffic, securing the ball, keeping it high, and finishing for a bucket in a crowded paint.
