PGH Sophomore ID Camp: The best of Team 5, part 1

Last week we covered the best of the best from the Prep Girls Hoops Freshman Showcase. This week we're back for more with our second event of the month; the PGH Sophomore ID Camp. The event, which was held at Maple Grove Middle School on Sunday, featured more than 100 players from around Minnesota. We saw great performances from some familiar faces, while others crossed our path for the first time. PGH scouts Grant McGinnis, Tony Ragulen, Paxyn Rendahl and I were on site all afternoon and will be breaking down the highlights one team at a time. Here is Team 5, part 1.    As a top-20 ranked prospect in the sophomore class, Layton (pictured above) is a player we've come to expect a lot from. Each time, the [program_tooltip program_id='713021' first='West' last='Central United'] guard seems to meet the moment. With few players to match her athleticism on Sunday, Greta was utterly dominant on offense. The long, 5'9 combo guard scored at every level. She hit smooth pullup jumpers in the midrange, made explosive downhill drives to the basket, and excelled at creating space for herself off the dribble out on the perimeter. On the defensive end, Layton was just as impactful. The Big Lake sophomore played with great intensity, using her length and lateral quickness to disrupt her opponents all afternoon.     Salas continues to impress us more and more each time we watch her play. While she's generally one of the smallest players on the court, the St. Paul Como Park guard plays with a toughness and competitive edge that you just can't teach. At Sunday's event it was Alayla's speed, ability to deliver well-timed passes, and shot creation in the midrange all made her stand out on offense. On defense it was her scrappy, aggressive style that paid dividends for Team 5. After averaging 11.9 points, 3.1 assists, and 3.2 steals per game for Como last season and exceeding expectations with [program_tooltip program_id='715704' first='Team' last='FSA'] this summer, it's clear that Salas is going to be a big deal for the Cougars in her sophomore season.     For someone who didn't start playing basketball until the 7th grade, Overman is pretty far along in her skill development. Standing at 6'0 with a long frame and ample athleticism, she has plenty of the physical tools, too. All throughout Sunday's event, Adelyn made a consistent impact through her efforts on the boards. Using her size and ability to elevate over opponents, the Maple Grove forward regularly crashed the glass, collected the rebound, and went back up for easy second-chance points. Coming from a high school program as big as the Crimson's, it could be some time before we see Overman's debut at the varsity level. Based on what we saw on Sunday that day might be sooner rather than later.     Hanson got off to a bit of a slow start at the Sophomore ID Camp, but as the day went on her impact increased for Team 5. The 5'5 guard showcased a tight handle on the ball, maintaining control even when under pressure. She pushed the pace in transition, kept things moving on offense, and displayed her signature quick-release shot from three. After averaging 7.9 points per game and making more than 40% of her shots from beyond the arc as a freshman, Quinn is likely to be a key contributor for Perham this winter.
