Nitro Wildcats’ season preview

NITRO - Nitro Wildcats' head coach Patrick Jones expects his group will be right back in the thick of the state tournament hunt one year after they fell to East Fairmont in a Class AAA state semifinal, 52-44. All-state center Karson Jones graduated after the defeat. Still, Jones and company have plenty of senior experience returning as the Wildcats look to capture their third state championship under Jones. Here are the girls who could play at the next level or have shown flashes of next level talent:

Adams is a true point guard. A floor general, if you will. She may be the best point guard in Class AAA. Her head is always up. Her mind is always processing information. She doesn't make a move until she is absolutely ready to make the offense move. She can make every pass. She can get to the basket, but she's more comfortable as the general. Her impact may not show up on the stat sheet, but she WILL leave a positive mark on any and every game. Her defense is superb. She may need a little time to get stronger at the next level, but she's crafty and capable when it comes to the college level.

Cawley would make a solid combo guard for a NCAA Division II school. Heck, I would lean more toward her being a 2. She can shoot the 3. She has a solid mid-range game. She can drive to the rim. She's patient. Her catch-and-shoot game will be a work in progress. The Wildcats do not play cut-heavy offense. However, she gets her shot up quickly and it looks good as she releases the ball. If she does get hot, watch out. Her confidence will soar and she can turn one three into a scoring frenzy in a hurry. She's one of the most consistent shooters on the team.

Gibson would like to go play college ball. No doubt about it. And, she should definitely have the opportunity. I wouldn't be surprised to see her average a double-double, this season with the graduation of Jones. Gibson is long, can handle the ball, and more than anything she's always looking for the ball. She's in position for a rebound. She's in passing lanes for steals. She can block and alter a number of shots. She has a great inside-out game on offense. She's definitely a Mountain East Conference-type player.

Kolkedy will put in the work. All. Of. The. Work. No matter what you ask of this young lady, she will do it on her own, or find a trainer to help her do even more work. Her training has helped her put together a strong offensive bag, regardless of her size. She's a great inside-out ball player. She can flash to the high post or step out and hit a triple. Her footwork in the post is exceptional for a guard. She would definitely be useful to a team who sees a lot of 2-3 zone defenses.

Steele is an athlete. Plain and simple. The kid is fast, talented and can do plenty of things well on both the soccer field and the basketball court. Due to the graduation of Jones, she will have a chance to show off her fast feet and footwork at the 5 for the Wildcats. College coaches can expect her to rebound the basketball and take it back up strong. She can be one of the best bigs in Class AAA's loaded South region.
