Top Sophomore Performances
Kylie Koeninger (Campbell County)
Kylie is a smooth finisher when attacking the inside. She loves to penetrate the defense and use her body to draw contact and get to the line. She made 7 out of her 9 attempts at the free throw line. She also has a really nice mid-range jumper. Campbell County defeated Johnson Central and Koeninger went on to win the Player of the Game with 22 points and 5 rebounds. Koeninger is really solid overall player. She displayed a little bit of everything.
Lacey Bradshaw (Notre Dame)
Bradshaw is super shifty when driving with the ball. Her dribbling skills had to be one of the best in this Classic. She knew exactly what to do and where to go when handling the ball. Amazing basketball IQ for only her 2nd year in high school. She ended the game with 12 points and 5 rebounds. I could tell that Bradshaw was one of the most talented players on this Notre Dame team. She has great potential and will have an amazing career at Notre Dame and so on.
Jillian MacKnight (Notre Dame)
MacKnight can absolutely stroke the ball. All of her points came in the 1st half with 14 points. Of those 14 points, 12 of them came from behind the arc. Those four 3s all came in the 2Q. She has a pretty shot and even though she did not score in the 2nd half, she went on to be the Player of the Game. Notre Dame defeated Dunbar, 46-26.
Lauren Thomas (Henry Clay)
Thomas finished with only 8 points but she snatched 8 rebounds as well. As this Henry Clay team really struggled to find the basket, Lauren’s 8 points all came in an impressive fashion. She can handle the ball really well at her size and even pulled out an euro-step in transition. She can finish on the offensive end and she can grab defensive rebounds. With more time and development, Lauren Thomas might arise as Henry Clay’s 1st or 2nd option offensively.
Recap
I was very impressed with these Sophomores as they did not look like Sophomores at all when they hit the hardwood. They all looked confident in their game and at times looked like the best players on the court. Bright futures for these players and I look forward to seeing what they can do this season.
