Both defensive minded teams in this matchup as both teams struggled to score the ball at times. #1 Sacred Heart ends up pulling out a 10-point victory over #8 Notre Dame, 57-47. Notre Dame drops to 18-6. Sacred Heart wins their 16th straight and improves to 24-1.
Five Takeaways
Josie Gilvin (Sacred Heart)
A breakout performance for the sophomore forward in their victory over Notre Dame. She finished with 16 points and 9 rebounds. She crashed the glass with force on both the defensive and offensive ends. She has great length and is very versatile while on the floor. She has a pretty mid-range jumper as well. This Sacred Heart team is already great but having a player like Gilvin stepping up will only make them even scarier. Hopefully this will be a confidence boost for Gilvin and she’ll continue to make strides. Josie wins my Player of the Game with her outstanding performance.
Lacey Bradshaw (Notre Dame)
One of the most talented players on the court was the sophomore guard, Lacey Bradshaw. She finished with a game-high 25 points. She shot 9/16 from the field and 7/8 from the free throw line. She managed to grab 6 rebounds as well. She loves the spin-move. Almost every time she would penetrate inside the paint, she would break out her quick spin-move. She is calm with the ball and very confident in her offensive abilities. Her finishing with her left hand is super smooth and almost unguardable. One of the top players in the 2022 Class and she showed why against the #1 team in the state.
Erin Toller (Sacred Heart)
The UK signee did a little bit of everything in this game. She finished with a team-high 20 points. She secured 6 rebounds and dished out 4 assists as well. She drew a lot of fouls in this one as she went to the line 12 times and hit 10 of them. Not a whole lot of scoring in this one and Sacred Heart loves to score. Toller and the Valkyries played excellent defense and out-rebounded Notre Dame by 13. Sacred Heart had much more size than Notre Dame and that was the big difference in the matchup. Despite Toller’s size, she isn’t afraid to go down-low and snatch boards.
Kristen Clemons (Sacred Heart)
Another great performance from the senior forward, Kristen Clemons. She finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Even though she is signed to play volleyball at Belmont next year, she is a fantastic basketball player as well. Her size and ability to score down-low is the thing that makes her so great. She plays hard and goes after the boards like it’s her job. She plays excellent defense down-low as well because of her length. She had 6 blocked shots in this game. Clemons’ size and experience definitely helps this team in many different ways. Offensively and defensively.
16th straight for Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart wins their 16th straight and improves to 24-1 for the season. Just this past week, they have defeated #9 Manual, #10 CAL, and #8 Notre Dame. They have a really impressive resume and still have two tough opponents left on the schedule, Mercy and #7 Bullitt East. The season isn’t over yet but I believe the Valkyries will finish strong with a 28-1 regular season record. Getting a younger player like Josie Gilvin to step up is huge for this team. If Erin Toller, Destinee Marshall, or Kristen Clemons have off-nights, then Josie would definitely be the one to step up offensively and crash the glass with force. Sacred Heart is filled with lots of experience and talent. Excited to see what happens next.
