I spent a lot of time on opening day in Duncanville and this was my 20th anniversary at the tournament and it started with my daughter's Westside team winning the event back in the 2006. Time has flown, the countless next-level players I've covered including beyond the collegiate level to play professionally, some in the WNBA has been a thrill for me and always remember, I am the FIRST person to cover girls basketball in Texas, so when I hashtag #ThereIsNoMe that alone, combined with a minute amount of common sense should end the discussion but in the discussion are 5 players who stood out on opening day

Milton is taking her show on the road to Wichita State after she graduates this season and my remembering her in elementary school being coached by her mom has me smiling with joy because even then, I knew she had the "IT" factor. She is an athletic guard who brings heat on both ends, she's also one of the most explosive players off the dribble yet her powerful finishes after contact. One of the things that has impressed me is her "thinking the game" as well as controlling the tempo but another thing that stands out is her upside for the next level

Thompson continues to elevate her game from my past sightings see evaluations here and always remember how important the double combo, "long and athletic" and standing at "the magic number" means before even stepping on the court. Her intangibles keep getting better, going AFTA everything off the rim on both ends, coming from out of nowhere to block shots and finishing strongly around the rim after contact, outbacks included, yet her first step is even better for her to attack off the dribble and her dropping the jumper with a hand in her face was another plus

Simmons has been "THAT GIRL" since I caught her back in 2022 with her Pro Skills club team and she also has that "double whammy" of "long and athletic" and "the magic number" working for her but the magic has been her "on the court" progression over the years see evaluations here and her transformation off the court had me baffled because she looks different as she's stronger and more powerful yet she she understands how to take over games, from both ends and that's huge

Cavin is not only one of the smoothest players in Texas, yet watching her simply take control of games is special see evaluations here I wrote "however she wants to" and that means she scored off the dribble, from outside with midrange or inside the paint, putbacks included yet she also saw the floor in transition as well as in the set to get her teammates good looks but make no mistake about it, she set the defender up to perfection and when you factor in she rebounded and played solid defense ...

Caudle left me speechless after her Queen Of The South performance see evaluation hereabout here's the deal, as a 7th grader playing up, she already was showing signs see evaluation here so how can I say this after Sandra Meadows , her ceiling has no roof as plenty of buzz was going from next level coaches because of what she's doing now, scoring at will, along with her upside but a couple of things have gotten even better, her body control after contact along with her "catch and shoot" with a hand in her face
