Get 30% off your first billing cycle with code: howe30 in the coupon code area

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Cedar Rapids arrived at Little Hawk Arena Tuesday night with upset on its mind and a great game plan to pull it off. Then, the J-Hawks executed. Mission accomplished.

The visitors jumped out to an early lead, gave it up, went ahead by double digits in the fourth quarter and staved off a late run by Class 5A No. 9 City High for a thrilling 48-44 victory. The J-Hawks improved to 7-13. The Little Hawks fell to 16-5.

Jefferson received positive contributions across the board throughout its rotation. I think I counted four or five different kids running the point at one time or another in the game. They crashed the boards, locked down defensively and out-hustled the favorites.

Here's a closer look at J-Hawk student-athletes that stood out during the upset followed by a photo gallery:

Jefferson leans heavily on Westerfield as a scorer and facilitator. Those contributions were compromised when the Jefferson junior found herself in foul trouble early and often when we watched her at Iowa City High late in the regular season. Put in that position, Westerfield displayed a great deal of maturity. She returned to the game with poise after sitting for an extended time twice, not forcing the action, just playing her game. A tight handle, quickness and explosiveness all are present. There's three-level scoring ability and excellent on-ball defense. Long arms help in getting shot attempts over taller opponents and in pestering opposing ball handlers.

Simply put, Spicer is a handful for opponents. The Jefferson junior was in her bag during an upset against Iowa City High late in the regular season. The Little Hawks usually have an inside advantage, but Spicer's power, strength and motor were too much for them to handle on this night. She led all scorers and likely grabbed the most rebounds. While Spicer does her best work on the low block, she can convert on all three levels. Athleticism and a high basketball IQ lead to her being a difficult matchup. Spicer can go through people at the rim or take slower-footed defenders out to the arc. She can knocked it down from out there or drive by folks.

Ulrich looked like a glue player when she competed against Iowa City High late during the regular season. The Jefferson sophomore was needed as a lead guard quite a bit because of team foul trouble. She handled it beautifully, facilitating offense, finding open teammates and keeping her team calm in a pressure-packed road game. Ulrich is efficient with a well-rounded skill set. She's a threat as a three-level scorer, has the size and length to defend multiple positions and chips in on the backboards. Ulrich is one to watch moving forward.

Foul trouble pushed Troh into running the point for a good deal of a game at Top 10 Iowa City High during the regular season. The way she handled that assignment went a long way in helping Jefferson pull off the upset. After the Little Hawks fell behind by double digits in the fourth quarter, they tried pressuring the visitors. Troh made sure that tactic was ineffective, consistently breaking the press, settling down the team and facilitating efficient half-court offense. Quickness and speed highlight Troh's game. The little left-hander sees the court well and gets downhill in a hurry. She's a sound on-ball defender and can score the rock when an opening arises because teammates are covered. Troh is an old-school point guard.

Creighton contributed in multiple areas when Jefferson pulled off an upset of Iowa City High late in the regular season. The sophomore brings a sound all-around game to the court, allowing for her to provide the team with whatever it needs at a given time. On this night, Creighton ran the point at times, looking smooth and efficient in doing so. Her long arms help her score from all three levels and defend multiple positions. A good athlete with lateral quickness and jumping ability, Creighton rebounds and runs the floor well. It feels like she's still figuring it out, which is exciting because the ceiling is significant.

2027 Cedar Rapids Jefferson CG [player_tooltip player_id='832201' first='Elysionna' last='Westerfield'].
