Class 1A: Emerging Sophomores For 2021

As the season begins to take shape, this holiday break is the perfect time to start looking ahead - both to the rest of this basketball campaign and the future. We want to offer up thoughts and highlight those players from each class and each grade level some publicity to try and help them gain the attention of a college coach or two. As always, if there is someone you feel we missed and deserves recognition, reach out through any means available. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="160571" first="Delaney" last="Scherf"], Central Elkader (2023)</strong> Central Elkader’s [player_tooltip player_id="160571" first="Delaney" last="Scherf"] has been causing problems for opposing teams this year on the hardwood. The sophomore standout has 42 steals in 10 games, adding 14 blocked shots. She also shines on the offensive end, scoring 153 points with 37 rebounds and 23 assists. Scherf has knocked down 16 triples and is shooting nearly 82 percent at the free throw stripe. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="127613" first="Jaeden" last="Ferris"], Westwood (2023)</strong> [player_tooltip player_id="127613" first="Jaeden" last="Ferris"] has picked right up where she left off as a freshman, leading Westwood to seven wins already. The talented prospect has scored 158 points on 42 percent shooting from the field and 36 percent shooting from the 3-point line. Ferris is also quick to find the open teammate, dishing out 39 assists with 25 steals and 26 rebounds on the year. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="127631" first="Kinzie" last="Theeler"], Whiting (2023)</strong> Whiting sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="127631" first="Kinzie" last="Theeler"] is well on her way to a big-time season. Through eight games, Theeler already has 128 points, 59 rebounds, 18 assists, 18 blocked shots and 17 steals. Theeler is shooting 43 percent from the field and is also active in getting to the free throw line with 45 attempts on the season to date. <strong>Sydney Hurd, Storm Lake St. Mary’s (2023)</strong> Storm Lake St. Mary’s has an interesting piece to keep an eye on in 6-foot-2 sophomore Sydney Hurd. The talented post player already has 22 blocked shots in just six games this season. Hurd is also shooting 50 percent from the field, recording 83 points with 59 rebounds and nine steals. She’s doing a nice job of staying out of foul trouble, as well, which is allowing her to produce on the court. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="127609" first="Mia" last="Boulton"], Montezuma (2023)</strong> [player_tooltip player_id="127609" first="Mia" last="Boulton"] was a key piece off the bench for Montezuma as a freshman last year, producing in a variety of roles. That has expanded this season with Boulton taking her game to the next level in the process. Now a starter, Boulton has scored 109 points already, shooting over 42 percent from the field with 28 made 3-pointers. She also has 32 rebounds, 36 steals and 22 assists in 10 games.
