Tucson preps girls basketball has an exceptional number of frontcourt players in 2021. The top five include players that have already committed to college programs. [player_tooltip player_id="72619" first="Alyssa" last="Brown"] of Sahuaro has committed to UNLV; [player_tooltip player_id="136239" first="Kiya" last="Dorroh"] of Compass Prep to Missouri; [player_tooltip player_id="136237" first="Marisa" last="Davis-Jones"] of Valley Vista to Washington; [player_tooltip player_id="136242" first="Bridget" last="Mullings"] to the University of California at San Diego; and [player_tooltip player_id="136246" first="Amanda" last="Barcello"] of Seton Catholic to Bringham Young. Here is an update on each player: [player_tooltip player_id="72619" first="Alyssa" last="Brown"] - is a Sahuaro senior and captain of the team’ The 6-1 forward was last winter’s Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year, averaging 31 points and 10 rebounds per game. She turned down several offers - Vanderbilt, Colorado, New Mexico, Rice, and UCSB - to commit to UNLV. "I am now continuing my academics and athletic career at UNLV," said Brown. "It is the perfect fit for me - perfect location, perfect program, and perfect resources for being a business major. I also have a strong connection with the UNLV coaches." Brown shot 55% from the field last year and 34% from behind the three-point arc. She also set a state scoring record by compiling 932 points and also averaging 3.9 steals per game and 1.3 blocks per game. In Sahuaro’s region (Kino) Brown was named both offensive and defensive Player of the Year. She also plays for Arizona Supreme and is a member of the Lady Cougars track and field team. [player_tooltip player_id="136239" first="Kiya" last="Dorroh"] - is a 6-0 shooting forward from Compass Prep who also plays for West Coast Premier and is committed to the University of Missouri. She started her high school career at Tanque Verde then transferred to Sabino where she helped her team win a state championship. Last May she again transferred to Compass Prep and reunites with her former coach at Sabino, Jamaal Rhodes. Believe it or not, Kiya received her first college offer while in 6th grade. Last winter she averaged 15.9 points per game, 5.7 rebounds per game, and 4.3 steals per game. She is deceptively athletic and a consistent finisher to the rim with great body control. She has arc range with her jump shot and elevates over defenders in her mid-range game. Kiya has an outstanding first-step attack when going to the basket, is very creative off the dribble, and is a versatile defender. Her stock should rise in 2021. Kiya considered several schools before signing with Missouri. "I have a really good relationship with Coach Robin Pingeton at Missouri and that just made me like the Tigers more than anyone else," she said. "Coach Pingeton has been recruiting me for a very long time, she’s always stuck through it and I’ve always had a great relationship with her." Marissa Davis-Jones - is a 6-1 point forward from Vista Valley High School in Surprise. Her grassroots team is WC Premier and she recently committed to the University of Washington. Marissa brings versatility and athleticism to the point forward position. She is also considered one of the best perimeter defenders in the state because of her length, speed, and mobility. Marissa is also a clutch player in transition and she scores quite a bit on fast-break baskets. She can also score off the low block and shoot the three-ball consistently. Marissa was the 2020 Arizona 6A Player of the Year, winning a state title for the third time in the last four seasons. She averaged 22.3 points per game along with 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 steals. and 1.6 blocks. As a freshman, she averaged 10.1 points per game and 16.1 as a sophomore. In the 2018 title game win, Marissa had 14 points and 18 rebounds. At Washington, she will be playing for Coach Jody Wynn. She had originally committed to Duke but de-committed before accepting a scholarship to Washington. "Marissa is an explosive athlete with a non-stop motor," said Coach Wynn. "She has an incredible work ethic and drives to excel. She is also a great rebounder and defender fits into our open court system, and has great upside." [player_tooltip player_id="136242" first="Bridget" last="Mullings"] - is a 6-2 power forward who transferred last May from Greenway High School in Phoenix to the new school, PHH Prep. Bridget also played on the volleyball team and track and field squad at Greenway. Over a two year stretch as a sophomore and junior, she averaged 18.8 points per game, 15.0 rebounds per game, 2.3 steals per game, and 1.9 blocks a game, This is for a total of 43 games. Bridget is an outstanding rebounder and shot-blocker with a great touch around the rim. She led Greenway to an 18-4 record in 2019-2020. In one game in 2019, she was selected Player of the Game by scoring 30 points and gathering 15 rebounds against Tempe High School. While considering offers from William and Mary, Tulsa, Southern Utah, Nevada-Reno, and Alaska-Anchorage, Bridget committed to the University of California at San Diego. "Bridget is the definition of someone not giving up," said PHH Prep Head Coach Mike Karre. "She was virtually unrecruited a summer ago to now having 10 plus offers. She has come so far in the last year. She will make an immediate impact at UCSD both on and off the court. I’m excited to see what her future holds." [player_tooltip player_id="136246" first="Amanda" last="Barcello"] - is a 6-0 senior wing for Seton Catholic. Last winter Seton Catholic won the 4A Girls State Championship under Head Coach Karen Self. Amanda’s Grassroots team is Arizona Select. On five occasions in 2019 and 2020, Amanda was selected as Player of the Game. Last February, against Estrella Foothills, she had a double-double. At the end of last summer, she committed to BYU. "I am super excited to announce that I will be part of the BYU family," said Barcello. "Looking forward to continuing my career that will not only help me grow as an athlete but also as a person. I’d like to thank my family, my siblings, and the coaching staffs at both Seton Catholic and Arizona Select. Can’t wait to be part of the BYU program.". Amanda’s family has quite a basketball background. Alex, Amanda’s brother, transferred to BYU from the University of Arizona. Her sister, Julia, played at Colgate and another sister, Sarah, played at Marist. Amanda’s father, Edward, led the state in scoring in 1987 at Brophy Prep. Mother Shelli played at Canyon del Oro High School where she was the second-leading scorer and top rebounder. The four siblings have won a total of 10 state titles. Seton Catholic finished 26-3 last year and Amanda averaged 9.8 points per game, 8.1 rebounds per game, and 3.1 steals per contest. Amanda can play multiple positions, has a good shooting range, and is a strong driver and finisher. She handles the ball well, is an outstanding rebounder for her size, and is a tireless defender.
