The Champion Challenge Tournament had some really good talent in the gym and it was nice to see new teams I haven’t covered before. Being from Minnesota it was weird to see girls not wearing mask on the court. I bet it’s a breath of relief when our girls travel to different states to play. With so many teams in attendance I set my sights on the teams in Pool C and Pool D. Here are the top performers from the 17U – 14U divisions.
17U Division
Hailee Marek (2022) – Illinois Rockets White
The 5’6 shooting guard was hot this weekend. She is a straight up knock down shooter. It was fascinating seeing her shoot the ball from beyond the arc. Her shot was always in rhythm and came off the hand perfect. In one of her games she hit 10 three pointers and went off for 32 points. I haven’t seen a high schooler shoot 71% from beyond the arc in a long time!
Ashley Oliver Ashley Oliver 5'8" | CG Hoffman Estates | 2022 State IL (2022) – Illinois Rockets Red
This combo guard played with energy and effort all game. She was good at attacking the hoop and finishing with contact. She can shoot the ball as well, making it hard for her defender to figure her out. In the two games I watched she went off for 18 points and 20 points, racking up plenty of other stats like rebounds, steals and assist.
16U Division
Madison Fitzgibbon (2025) – Chapman Basketball Academy (CBA) U16 Gold Wolf
The point guard was great all weekend, playing up two divisions and leading her team to a undefeated tournament. She’s another knock down shooter that can go off when she gets hot. Afew times I had to call heat check on her. In one of the games she hit 5 threes and ended the tournament with 17 total made in four games. She averaged 19 points across the weekend. Watch out for her!
15U Division
Lyric Burns Lyric Burns 5'10" | PF Verona | 2024 WI (2024) – Wisconsin Primer 2024
The 5’11 forward impressed me with her strength and strategy under the rim. She posted up hard and finished strong on her post ups. Burns is good at getting good position so she can get offensive rebounds and put backs, often leading to an and one. I also saw her run the floor in transition. When she started to get doubled teamed in the post, she was able to make a good pass out to the open player. She’s got the grit and the effort I like to see and coach.
14U Division
Kelly Boinski (2025) – Wisconsin Impact 2025
The combo guard is a scoring machine. She did it from everywhere on the court; she attacked the defense and also knocked it down from three. Even while being doubled through out the game she was able to get free and find the open holes. The first game I watched she dropped 22 points and the second game I watched of hers, she put up a big 25 points leading her team to be undefeated for the weekend.
