This article continues a large series of articles that have come out since the release of our Prep Girls Hoops New Jersey prospect rankings several months ago.
We’re nearly done profiling everyone included and we return to the 2024 class to discuss the No. 31-34 ranked sophomores as ranked by the Prep Girls Hoops New Jersey team.
No. 31: Julia Karpell Julia Karpell SG St. John Vianney | 2024 State NJ – SG, St. John Vianney
The daughter of SJV head coach Dawn Karpell, Julia appeared in all 14 games last season off the bench, averaging over 1.0 PPG and APG as a freshman, numbers to build off of coming into this winter.
Where she really improved was during the offseason, playing on Team Rio’s 15U squad. Karpell is working her way up the totem pole at SJV and should be a starter as either a junior or senior.
Her best asset on the floor is her passing ability and she really thrives at the point finding open teammates for scoring opportunities. That is really going to be a key moving forward with her development as a player.
No. 32: Amanda Baylock Amanda Baylock 5'6" | PG Scotch Plains-Fanwood | 2024 State NJ – 5-5 PG, Scotch Plains-Fanwood
Baylock solidified herself as an important piece for SPF in the years to come as her freshman season was a fantastic one, leading the team in three-point shooting and assists, finishing second in steals and fifth in rebounds.
The now-sophomore guard isn’t going to overwhelm opponents in the middle, but her strengths lie on the perimeter, where 33.8 percent of her scoring came in the spring.
Let’s not forget that a quarter of the Raiders’ assists came from Baylock and she averaged nearly three steals a game. Baylock should eclipse a double-digit scoring average this season and on top of that, burst through with her three-point shooting that much further.
No. 33: Miya Villari Miya Villari PF Pitman | 2024 State NJ – PF, Pitman
Villari very quickly established a shot-blocking game that could rival any other player in South Jersey, averaging over a block a game as a freshman.
She, like her sister and teammate, Alaina, are both forwards and it looks like the family genes have passed down well because Miya is expected to be Pitman’s go-to playmaker this season.
Despite making her living in the interior, the offense will flow through her and her agility and finesse in the paint should translate to a potential double-double season overall.
No. 34: Sienna Corey Sienna Corey 5'6" | PG Northern Highlands | 2024 State NJ – 5-6 SG, Pascack Hills
On a team that thrives off the three-pointer, Corey is already one of its best, if not its best three-point shooter coming into the winter.
Corey was tied for second in made three-point field goals with senior Christina Boffa last season, Corey’s freshman year. With a massive senior class leaving the program, that leaves Corey as the main three-point option for Pascack Hills.
Nearly half of her scoring in the spring came from beyond the arc and she made just over 1.5 threes a game on average as a freshman. The full season will benefit her greatly as those threes will be raining down much more often.
More previews and player profiles are on the way from Prep Girls Hoops New Jersey, so stay tuned.
