Continue ReadingThe December holidays are a great time for family, friends, and of course gift-giving. For Prep Girls Hoops Indiana, it’s one of our scheduled quarterly releases for player rankings, plus it’s a time when we expand our lists and add new prospects. As we approach late-December, I wanted to give you a glimpse into five young ladies who are sure to be a part of that expansion. Now, these aren’t the only players who will be added, but they are five who have stood out so far this Fall and/or high school season and deserve to be mentioned.

, 2022, 5-10 PF, Valparaiso H.S.
– “Bo” has been on our radar for some time because of her physical talent. She is extremely long, wiry-strong, fast, and bouncy. She looks an inch or two taller than when I saw her in May, and she is one of the main catalysts in Valpo’s 9-1 start this season. She is averaging 9.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in a balanced lineup, and she plays at the top of their 1-3-1 3/4-court trap, causing an immense amount of havoc up there. She still needs a little touch on her shot, but she is all energy and talent.
Genesis Borom, 2022, 5-5 CG, Portage H.S.
– This high school season was my first time hearing Genesis’ name, and she has started the season strong thus far. She is a long, somewhere slender, but fluid and smooth combo guard who does a little of everything for her team. She can handle the ball, run offense, or break down defenders and get into the paint. She has a soft touch at all levels, plus she does a nice job of using her length defensively. She is currently averaging 13.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 3.8 steals per game.

, 2022, 5-7 CG, Fort Wayne Snider H.S.
– Jyah won’t just be new to the rankings this month, she is also new to Indiana, having moved in from California this Fall. Our PGH California site had her as the #9 player in that state, and she toured with the Cal Sparks EYBL outfit. She is an explosive scorer, having posted performances of 61 and 55 points a season ago. She has ball skill, strength, and all-around athleticism. She has already proven to be a nice compliment to the talented 2024 class Snider possesses, averaging 15.1 points and 3.1 steals per game.
Carly Sherfield, 2022, 5-7 SG, Edgewood H.S.
– My familiarity with Carly is rather limited, as she hasn’t ever been a big grassroots participant. She has been a big weapon for the Mustangs over the last season and a half, averaging 11.8 points per game during that span (15.1 through 11 games this season). She is a nice, multisport athlete, and while she’s a capable shooter outside, she does an even better job of earning trips to the free throw line. Carly has helped Edgewood to an 11-0 start to the year, and she shares the backcourt with twin sister Claire.
Kelsey Waggoner, 2022, 5-8 SG, Cardinal Ritter H.S.
– Kelsey is a 3-sport athlete, also participating in volleyball and softball, so you might not have seen her as often on the hardwood in the Spring and Summer months, though she has played grassroots ball in the past. She is a well-rounded athlete with wiry strength, and she has really picked up her scoring this season, averaging 18.7 points per game through 13 games. She is approaching the 1000-point plateau as well, plus she is a willing rebounder, a solid defender, and she plays with a nice motor.
