I also have been there as a parent and I too was caught up in numbers so when a college coach came to see my daughter play, she watched my daughter commit a foul and miss a couple of shots and the coach walked off. A few days later, that same coach called asking for the high school coaches information and I said “but coach, she missed the shots and you left” and her response was ” yes but she had 3 steals, 4 assists, was vocal on the court, broke the press by herself” and she topped it off by saying “Mr. Colson, there are more important things than scoring and it only takes me a couple of minutes to know a player”
That same philosophy hit me over the head and that particular school was one of over 100 at the D1 level that offered my daughter before she decided on Texas A&M where she won a National Championship and has played around 8 years in the WNBA, so again, #ThereIsNoMe because I will always keep it real and I know what I’m looking at without a stat or score sheet so here are some players that don’t necessarily put up numbers but their intangibles are next level so here are some players I’ve tagged as THE GLUE for June events
Macie Whitfield (Houston United 832)
Whitfield understands her role and plays it to a tee as she can come in and change the complexion of the game with a blink of an eye. She’s heady, and plays within herself yet she’s ready to drop that clutch shot or grab the clutch rebound yet her court vision has always stood out and making the big pass when it counts is also a huge plus
Kimora McClure ( Competitive Edge 2023)
McClure has SWB, that’s SPEED WITH THE BALL, and being under control going coast to coast after outrebounding players 6 inches taller should give you an idea but her “on the ball” defense is smothering and creates turnovers which can change the momentum of a game just like that. She scores acrobatically off the dribble and can drop it from outside
Tyra Oliver (Austin Elite RFW)
Oliver is another TO that scored a TD when I first saw her yet the extra points have added up so many ways. The initial sighting had her dropping around 20 and since then her defense has created major problems, she rebounds on both ends against taller players and she is also instant offense off the bench but her playing the passing lane JUST DOES IT for me
Khloe Vaughn (Houston United Chuck) 2024
Vaughn is so poised under pressure, doesn’t get rattled and her composure trickles down to her teammates. The game has and always will start at the 1, she directs traffic better than a cop on Westheimer, she’s vocal on the court and you count on her to make solid decisions, especially down the stretch yet she also scores off the dribble and with the jumper
Stella Laubenstein (Competitive Edge Elite 2024) 2024
Laubenstein never lost her groove as she does something very important and that’s “get hers in the flow” but in between, she applies heat on the defensive end, rebounding on both ends of the court, taking charges, forcing the trap, and something that is a lost art, calling screens yet she can score from outside plus she sees the floor well
Ivy Powell (Competitive Edge Elite 2025 Black) 2025
Powell has been tagged “Poison Ivy” because she is doing plenty of damage in short spans throughout the game. She’s long and athletic, that’s the base folks, and watching her elevate to score or bloc=k shots is part of it. She rebounds on both ends, can handle the ball the length of the floor under pressure, that mid to long-range is very nice and she plays, drumroll, please. the passing lane
