Continue ReadingThe months of November and December have had some very good guard play at the point and off guard positions. The young ladies who have played these positions have done a good job of being a threat whether it is scoring or distributing the ball. In this PGH Louisiana exclusive, we will take a look at guards from the Thanksgiving Classic to the Red River Hoopfest. These ladies have definitely shown they can handle these guard positions.
Kristine Brooks (5’1″ | Woodlawn-Shreveport)
The miniature dynamo was highly active on both ends of the floor during the Lady Knights contests at the Thanksgiving Classic. There were several situations where she stole the ball on one end and finished on the other end beating everyone down the floor. She also displayed that she can make the outside shot as well. Brooks may be the fastest player from end-to-end in the NWLA girls game. That means trouble for whoever defends her.
Chloe Larry Chloe Larry 5'7" | PG Parkway | 2024 State LA (5’4″ | Parkway)
Larry displayed how dangerous she can be off the ball in the Lady Panthers loss to Sierra Canyon. She is a player who attacks well off curls and hand-offs. She has a low center of gravity but is strong enough to take contact when she is diving to the hole. From the perimeter, her lefty shot showed her marksmanship from deep. She led Parkway with 21 and was highly effective in the half court offensively.
Younique Jackson (5’4″ | BTW-Shreveport)
Jackson is a player who is very good at getting to her spots on the floor and uses the dribble to do it. Her shooting from the free throw line/mid-range is very consistent and makes her a true threat at that level. Jackson is also very good at handling the ball in transition and finds teammates cutting to the goal or gets to the rim taking on contact. Her mid-range game makes her one of the premiere combo guards in northwest Louisiana.
Asia Foster (5’3″ | BTW-Shreveport)
The Lion senior is very good at scoring at multiple levels on the floor. While she is very good at the spot up three, she is most dangerous at any spot within 19 feet. Her jumper is one of the most consistent that I have seen in the girls game. She makes them like she is making a layup. Foster also can get to the rim and finish with either hand. With her ability to push and place pressure on the defense, Foster is a player to watch for the next level.
Vivian Franklin Vivian Franklin 5'8" | SG Greenhill School | 2025 State TX (5’6″ | Desoto)
Desoto High has a young core and Franklin is an important part of that core. She is a tenacious on-ball defender who causes turnovers when she locks in. When she has the ball in her hands, she makes plays for herself or others. Franklin has top level speed and finds her finishers early in transition. During the Red River Hoopfest, she displayed all these traits as well as the ability to shoot the three. Franklin is an underclassman who plays at a very high level.
Rieyan Desouze Rieyan Desouze 5'7" | PG Desoto | 2026 State TX (5’6″ | Desoto)
DeSouze is another Desoto underclassmen who places a lot of pressure on defenses. She is excellent at spotting up and showed the ability to make multiple open threes. DeSouze also plays high level defense and creates turnovers by her movement. She is very good at playing in the open floor and can finish on her own as well as make good passes to her teammates. DeSouze is a player to definitely watch going forward.
All of these guards play high level on-ball defense and are a blur in transition. Schools on the next level will love the way they defend and play in transition.
