Virginia Academy is used to scoring a lot of points and flexing its muscles as an excellent offensive squad. But against Miller in the VISAA division two finals, they won a low scoring grind it out game. Senior guard Joi Williams Joi Williams 5’7″ | PG Virginia Academy | 2023 State VA was this game’s most productive offensive player, finishing with 16 points. She used her elite ball handling and overall skill to catalyze VA academy winning.
Riley Hamburger Riley Hamburger 6’0″ | SG Paul VI | 2025 State VA ‘s defense against Kymora Johnson Kymora Johnson 5’8″ | CG St. Anne’s Belfield | 2023 State VA was the biggest key in this game. Riley’s defense has been tremendous for PVI, and although it takes a team effort to contain someone like Kymora, it starts with her initial defender. Riley was tenacious all game and made life difficult for Kymora. She often picked her up full court and did her work for everything.
This season, Brooke Batchelor Brooke Batchelor 5’10” | SG Paul VI | 2023 State VA was one of the best off-the-ball players in Virginia. PVI is one of the most talented teams in the state, so not everyone will have the chance to eat every night. You will need players to fill roles, and Brooke does this perfectly. St. Anne’s doubled PVI’s bigs all night and emphasized stopping said bigs. Brooke took advantage of this, cutting behind ball watching defenders, and finishing at the rim. She hit three back-breaking 3s in the second half and had a masterful game.
Laura Williams Laura Williams 6’2″ | PF Paul VI | 2024 State VA was the player of the day and was dominant. I mentioned earlier how important it was for PVI to limit Kymora Johnson Kymora Johnson 5’8″ | CG St. Anne’s Belfield | 2023 State VA and that it took more than one person to do that. Laura made life difficult for every player on St. Anne’s-Belfield, and in the first half, she was the reason Kymora was stuck on 1-8 shooting for a portion of the first half. She had 4 blocks heading into halftime and bullied STAB all game. As good of a team as STAB is, they play small and had no answer for Laura Williams Laura Williams 6’2″ | PF Paul VI | 2024 State VA . If there were a DPOY in Virginia this season, I’m not so sure Laura Williams Laura Williams 6’2″ | PF Paul VI | 2024 State VA would not get that honor.
Kymora struggled in the first half for her standards. She had only 12 points, and her not being at her best was why STAB was down at the half. But in the second half, she kept her team in the game, hitting a couple of 3s and playing extremely hard. She kept her team in it and was their best offensive player.
