Continue ReadingI, along with my siblings, attended HISD schools and my children attended various schools in the district so I’m somewhat of an expert of the district since I graduated in 1978 and saw some girl’s games back then and have been watching girl’s basketball intensely since 1998, the game grew in those 20 years or did it? I can’t really answer because I wasn’t interested when I was in school and to be honest, I only became interested when my daughters wanted to play, so since right before the turn of the century, I’m somewhat of an authority at the action here in Houston. Madison dominated the district for years, Jones and Lamar had several good runs but around 2003 the change began as Bellaire and Westside became one of the teams to beat as well. I always love to see underdogs come up and Heights, formerly Reagan, HISD changed many school names due to their ties with Confederate loyalists, but enough of a short history lesson
Heights was somewhat of a surprise team last season, losing by one point to Katy in the second round of the playoffs but they have enough talent to make me believe they can create some problems down the stretch. Gracelynn Alvarez is one of the top long ball shooters in the state and she opened her high school career with 40 points as a freshman. She is the spark that ignites this squad and don’t blink because she can go off an a moments notice.
Aaliyah MaciaAaliyah Macias might be the unsung hero as she does many things that don’t show up on the score sheet but she can score, mid to long range consistently .Tierra Simon shot stock up during the summer, she’s one of the best posts in the state and joins Alvarez as some of the top players in the Texas 2021 class. She’s powerful in the paint, rebounds on both ends and finishes strongly but she also can face the basket and score and that inside-outside, one-two combination of her and Alvarez will create problems because the supporting cast, such as Macias, will be ready and able to drop some baskets when needed. Jada Beasley is another player that will pay dividends throughout the season, she brings so much energy, but they’re are others
Sincedre RobertsWhen I say others, I’m being sincere and with that being said, Sincere Roberts is coming off of a huge summer. She made a Tip Sheet, she exploded to the basket for buckets and her pull-up in transition, mid to long range, will make her a nice addition to the Texas 2021 Top 100 plus. Tatianna Brown and Kamryn Cole, along with Macias, are heading into sophomore seasons while the rest of the squad is from the 2021 class so I’ll be keeping a close eye on Heights this season, primarily because they’re close to me but when I take the time to go and watch a single game, I want to see action and smart, team play and watching these young ladies during the summer, for years, tells me I’m going to get what I want on the court
