Prospect Spotlight: Zakia Rasheed (2021)
Bishop Chatard is coming into the 2019-20 season with big expectations coming off a 16-10 record the previous season. Last season Zakia Rasheed anchored the team averaging 17 points per game as a sophomore. The 5’8 junior guard is coming off a strong AAU season playing up on the 17U level with Always 100 Attack. Heading into her junior season Rasheed is on a mission to help lead her team deep into the postseason as well as increase her production on the court herself.
The beginning of the AAU season got off to a slow start but ended well as the team gained chemistry. During the summer Rasheed was able to excel with her up-tempo style of play. It should translate very well into her upcoming high school season. “I had a slow start because I had to adjust to a new team, new coach, and new program,” Rasheed said. “I was able to play in front of a lot of coaches which was great.”
Rasheed is an extremely versatile player who has a high IQ and the ability to create opportunities for her teammates. She also has a knack for scoring in a multitude of ways and excels at scoring on the drive. Her motor has helped her separate herself from other players. Being able to play and guard positions 1-3 has given her the ability to be versatile and always have a spot on the floor. She rebounds extremely well for her position and has devoted a ton of time this summer to improving her speed and agility. Her passing ability will help open up opportunities for her teammates to score. Being a junior Rasheed has a lot of time left to grow in many different areas of her game. Being able to get her shot off quickly has been one of her keys to work on this off season.
Heading into this year Rasheed has set the bar high for her high school season and team. She also wants to find the college that is right for her. She has said that she would like to commit sometime this season. Having the ability to outwork her opponents along with her physical abilities will take her a long way this season and beyond. She currently holds offers from Loyola, Wright State, FIU, Detroit Mercy, IUPUI, Akron, Southeast Missouri State, and North Alabama, She is hearing from several low to mid majors.
“The goal for us this year is to win the sectional, conference, city, and hopefully make it to state. (Individually) average at least 19 points per game and make the junior all-star team”
