I am back from vacation just in time for the start of the big month that is June. It is an important month as high school teams get together to train and compete while club teams, for the most part, take a step back. Many teams find their way to college team camps as well as to the terrific MAYB 1A/2A, 3A/4A and 5A/6A tournaments. Large numbers of players can get viewed by scouts and college coaches during that stretch. There will be many rising 3A talents to see in the days ahead. Here is a look at five.

Black has been a part of the Cardinals' backcourt rotation through two state tournament runs. This past season she picked up honorable mention recognition from the Central Plains League and for 3A by Sports In Kansas. She has solid handles, is strong to the basket, has the ability to create her own shot and is poised when trapped. In open court situations Black works and finishes at speed. She does need to improve positioning, which would improve her peripheral vision.

Brawner had a big sophomore season that culminated in a state tournament appearance. I expect her to be one of the top players in the class in 2025. Most nights she is the biggest, strongest player on the floor. Add to it that she is very athletic, quick, fast and a creative scorer. A terrific free throw shooter, fouling her is not a good strategy as she finishes through contact with the best of them. Brawner plays and defends on the wing and inside effectively. She can dominate the glass and knocks down shots with jump shooting ability. She earned Central Kansas League second team, KBCA 3A third team, and KSHSAA and Sports In Kansas 3A honorable mention honors.

Combs is emerging as a top small forward in the class. Her play last season rewarded her with Tri-Valley League second team and KSHSAA and Sports In Kansas honorable mention honors. She has size and speed and, as Cheney found out in their sub-state final, can flat out shoot the ball from all over the perimeter. Playing with 365 Hoops this summer expect the extra several dozen games to sharpen her overall game to help make the Blue Streaks a favorite to reach the state tournament.

Dick is establishing herself as one of the top three point shooting threats in the class. She spots well and can knock down shots on the move. Dick is a growing, creative finisher with a nice floater in her repertoire. Her strong motor shows up defensively as she anticipates passes well off-ball to generate steals. She wrapped up the season with Mid-East League second team and KSHSAA and Sports In Kansas honorable mention honors.

Do not look now but Hesston has one of the top power forwards in the class that has steadily improved over the years. In last year's 3A state title game she hung 26 points, shooting 3/5 from three point land, in a hard fought loss to Silver Lake. She also collected 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. She used her transition speed, athleticism, hops, length and soft touch around the rim to score over or around any big the Eagles tried to defend her with. A Central Kansas League second teamer Proctor was also named to KBCA's second as well as KSHSAA's and Sports In Kansas's honorable mention teams.
