I went through a number of criteria such as motor, flashiness, physicality, and skill as well as just being a fun player to watch. The 15th article in a series of 73 highlights the ten 2A players who I think you need to watch this winter, in no particular order. Tomorrow I’ll have 10 3A players who you have to see this season.
Chloe Lofstrom – 5’11 PF – 2020 – North Union
Lofstrom might just be the hardest worker in the state. She has a super strong lower base and moves players around in the post. She is also supremely athletic which gives her another dimension. Lofstrom is one of the toughest kids in the state too. Committed to Morningside.
Taryn Scheuermann – 6’2 C – 2020 – Van Buren
Scheuermann is the best shot blocker in the state and that simple reason is why she makes this list. She has a knack for getting to the offensive player and sending their shot back. Players have no chance to score in the paint against her. Committed to Northern Iowa.
Nicole McDermott – 5’6 SG – 2020 – Cascade
McDermott is one of the purest scorers in the entire state. She can get to the rim or pull-up in transition. She is one of the most fluid players in the state as well. McDermott has the ability to score as many points as she wants which makes her must watch. Committed to Clarke.
JeMae Nichols – 5’10 SF – 2021 – Cherokee
Nichols has a ton of athleticism and that makes her one of the state’s top defenders. I really enjoy watching her because she makes plays defensively that many cannot make. To make that next jump she needs to find a consistent jumper. Someone who is always the most athletic on the floor.
Sasha Koenig – 5’5 PG – 2021 – West Branch
Koenig is a small and feisty point guard whose grit makes up for her size. She also knows how to win which makes her even more fun to watch. Koenig is a tremendously fluid offensive player and she goes hard on the court at all times. This is going to be a fun group to watch this season.
Sophia Jungling – 5’5 PG – 2020 – Aplington-Parkersburg (Photo)
While there are a lot of kids that have a really good motor, Jungling has the best motor. She is always moving on defense and looking to steal the ball. A jitterbug type player, Jungling is always trying to make the first move. You have to watch her play this season.
Ellie Foster – 5’11 PG – 2020 – Dike-New Hartford
Quite possibly one of the most fun players to watch in the entire 2020 class, Foster can score the ball as well as anyone. She is shifty in the lane and can get her shot off with ease. Look for her to have a big year scoring the ball and then a great college career. Committed to UW-Green Bay.
Helaina Hillyard – 5’10 SF – 2020 – Mediapolis
Hillyard is a jack-of-all-trades type of player. She does a little big of everything from scoring and rebounding to leading the state in assists and steals. She is going to be a key player for Mediapolis this season. Hillyard will be racking up the statistical accolades this season. Western Illinois volleyball commit.
Emma McKinney – 5’10 SF – 2020 – South Central Calhoun
I love the game of McKinney and I think that she has a huge year in store. She’s fluid with the ball, solid in all directions, and plays as hard as she can every play. I think that she is a little under the radar right now but with a big start to her senior year that will change.
Mallory McCall – 5’9 SF – 2021 – West Monona
McCall suffered a gruesome injury early in the season last year and is just now getting closer to 100%. Although she may never get back to 100%, she is still a player in the state who I would seek out to watch. She’s a strong interior player with a ton of athleticism who makes pretty much every shot.
