Expert Analysis
BJ Batson | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
Ellison is completed an excellent high school career with an outstanding senior season for Pickens before signing with North Georgia where she will continue her athletic and academic career. Ellison is a scorer, pure and simple, and while she does everything well, this is what made her such a nightmare on opposing defenses. She is long, making her shot difficult to block and even alter on the high school level. She is an underrated athlete and gets good elevation her shots as well. Steinhauer incorporated the drive more and more to her game over the last few years making her one of the more complete offensive players in Georgia. She handled all of the defensive pressure and attention well when I saw her live, picking apart the opposing teams’ defense with the pass in both games. She is an excellent ball handler as well who rarely turns the ball over of forces a bad shot. Her game should translate very well on the next level.

Ellison, who recently signed to play at North Georgia) finished the season averaging over 23 points and 14 rebounds for Pickens in a very difficult 6AAA region. The most impressive thing about Ellison’s game is her composure and calm on the ball. She does not get sped up by the other teams defense, but does a great job changing up her pace with the ball keeping the opposing guards off balance. Steinhauer is an elite shooter off the pass and dribble where she has improved in creating her own shot the last couple years. Ellison is very talented and her team is battle tested in a very difficult region 6AAA with GAC, White County, Lumpkin, and North Hall who all won their opening games in the tournament. She will need a big individual performance for Pickens to win versus Jenkins.

Ellison is on the verge of cementing herself as a D-I prospect. Her intangibles and understanding of the game are through the roof, the daughter of a former head coach. Steinhauer is wiry and thin, but there is lean muscle on her frame and she plays with functional strength, a tough finisher through contact and a crafty slasher who doesn’t easily get moved off her spot. Ellison has developed a hitch her jump shot but it’s a mechanic that hasn’t altered how good of a shooter she is. Steinhauer scores from all over and is a quick instinct defender.

Named the Class 3A Freshman of the Year, Ellison has plenty of momentum heading into Peach Games. The wiry guard has a high IQ and nose for the ball. She is steady across the board in all phases of the game. Steinhauer is good at finding cracks in the defense as a slasher, but she also excels from beyond the arc, leading Pickens in three-point shooting going 53-155 (34%) while pacing the Nettes at 14.6 points per game to go along with her 3.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.3 steals.

Some of Steinhauer’s most impressive basketball has come during the travel circuit when she has worn the Georgia Flames uniform – including in last year’s Prep Girls Hoops Circuit. That was the case again on a Saturday Spring evening in the Triangle as she notched 17 points to lead her AAU team to a victory over fellow Peach State foes Peak Performance Webb 17U. Along with being a scorer, she too displays a toughness to her game as she is not afraid to fall to the floor if it means completing a play. Much of what she does involves either passing to open teammates or attacking the rim even against a number of opposing defenders. Steinhauer is a skilled handler of the ball and manages to limit turnovers, can get creative with how she drives and finishes at the rim and can deflect passes to affect an opposing team’s passing lanes.

The high IQ guard seemingly is always in the right place at the right time. She’s very unselfish with the ball, but knows when to hunt her offense. She slides onto the offensive glass for putbacks. Ellison sees the floor well both offensively and defensively. She is quick to rotate over and uses her length and activity to pick up steals and deflections.
