About Katie
Expert Analysis
Mike Benson | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
Burchill is a tremendous talent with plenty of Division 2 offers. She is impressive to watch in person. She isn’t afraid of anyone and uses her strength well around the basket. She is undersized from a height perspective, standing at 5’11. This shouldn’t scare any college coaches away. She can defend true centers because of how strong she is. If they throw a small forward on her, she will be able to bully them to the basket. Katie continues to improve and is poised for another terrific season in 26-27.

Katie “The Bulldog” Burchill (give credit to me when you use this nickname!), is patiently waiting to make a decision on where to play college hoops. The Valley City star has an impressive awards case that features back-to-back Class A Championships and back-to-back Class A Tournament MVP awards. She is a bully around the basket and uses her strength exceptionally well. Her raw strength, effort, and enthusiasm around the basket is hard for opponents to match. She holds a handful of Division 2 offers and I expect her to do well at that level.

Burchill, one of the top forwards in the state, continues to improve. Coach Porter has appreciated her improvement with her ball-handling. All great players need to be able to handle the rock. Athletes can’t be a liability with turning the ball over and it is good to hear Katie is working on her game. She excels around the basket and has the physicality to dominate and be effective at the next level. She holds a handful of Northern Sun offers. I would expect that number to grow by the end of the summer.

Burchill recently picked up a Division 2 offer from Minnesota State University Moorhead, a high-level Division 2 program. She is well on her way to all regional NSIC schools giving her a hard look. The 2025 Class A Tournament MVP is the real deal and is scratching the surface of how good she can be. She is one of the strongest and most physical players in the state and is beginning to learn how to use that strength to leverage positioning around the basket. She is a true competitor and isn’t afraid of the big moment.

I love Katie’s game and think that she is just scratching the surface of how good she can be. She has strong shoulders and a great base to compete with older and bigger girls. She led Valley City to the Class A title last season and was the Tournament MVP. She is geared up for a great encore as a Junior after balling out this summer.

Katie is a sought after D2/D3 and NAIA recruit. I have spoken with a handful of coaches about Katie’s potential at the next level. She is incredibly strong and very difficult to move when she is around the basket. She is able to lean on opponents and wear them out. She plays with supreme toughness and is just scratching the surface of how good she could be.

Katie is always fun to watch and Thursday was no different. She is one of the most physical players in the entire state and has two more years of high school to get even stronger. She was incredibly hard to keep away from the rim. I would have expected her to have shot a ton of free throws if the games had been officiated. She thrives getting to the line and is relentless around the rim. I noticed she used few more post moves Thursday which was encouraging.
