Expert Analysis
Joel Webb | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
The athletic combo guard got off to a slow start scoring the basketball, but it allowed her to showcase her unselfishness and playmaking ability. Leah quickly found her rhythm late in the first quarter, knocking down a three before earning trips to the free-throw line. She attacked the basket when angles were in her favor and, when defenders closed out late, confidently displayed her range from beyond the arc.

Her high basketball IQ showed as she consistently made smart reads, found open space, and anticipated plays before they developed. The Ottawa guard scored 18.5 points per game over 14 games. She shot an impressive 67 percent from the free-throw line and drained 18 buckets from deep for the Cyclones. Her sophomore season stat line also featured averages of 4.6 rebounds, 4.5 steals, and 3.1 assists per game. I would consider her one of the top defenders in the 2027 crop of athletes.

Ottawa’s Askins-Dieterich was among the leaders in steals Jayhawk State last season. She recorded 63 steals in 14 games played, good for an average of 4.5 points per contest. She also scored 18.5 points per game and more than four rebounds per game. I saw her play volleyball last month and can see how her quickness and court awareness would translate to the basketball court. She is ranked No. 18 overall in the Kansas Class of 2027.

I recently scouted the Ottawa Cylones, and their setter is a high-ranked basketball prospect. Askins-Dieterich has dished out 428 assists in 52 sets played to date. She has quick feet and his a verbal leader on the court in both sports. She has solid upper-body strength and is an athlete, I would think Division II coaches in both sports would be interested in. She has also recorded 21 kills and 15 blocks for the Cyclones. She is ranked No. 18 overall in the Kansas Class of 2027.

I have seen the Cyclones play basketball. I have scouted their volleyball team a couple of times. Askins-Dieterich is a big-time scorer that I have followed on MaxPreps. She is ranked No. 21 overall in the Kansas Class of 2027. Ottawa is a solid 45-minute drive from Topeka, and I don’t drive at night as often as I used to, but maybe I will catch them during a tournament somewhere. The Ottawa combo guard is on my short list of players I want to see for the first time.
