Expert Analysis
Tink Butler | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
Makayla was one of the more exciting guards to watch throughout the evaluation period, displaying a polished all-around game that impacted both ends of the floor. She has developed into a highly accurate perimeter shooter, consistently knocking down shots from beyond the arc while forcing defenses to extend well outside the three-point line. As a floor general, she plays with confidence, has a tight handle, and does an excellent job of getting into the lane to finish at the rim or create opportunities for her teammates.
Defensively, Makayla competes with the same intensity she brings on offense. She gets low in her stance, applies relentless ball pressure, and has a knack for disrupting opposing guards, turning active hands into steals and transition opportunities. Her combination of shooting, playmaking, and on-ball defense makes her one of the more complete young point guards in the Class of 2030 and a player whose stock rose her from the 18th spot to No. 6.

Smith leads by example every possession. She never takes a play off. She never shows frustration or panic. Instead, she competes with maturity beyond her years. As a result, teammates feed off her steady presence.
Offensively, Smith is a pass-first point guard. However, she scores when the opportunity presents itself. She pushes the break with confidence. Likewise, she executes the half-court offense with precision. Her high basketball IQ keeps the offense organized.
Defensively, Smith remains just as disciplined. She is rarely out of position. Instead, she guides ball handlers into difficult situations. Then, she capitalizes on their mistakes. Her consistency makes her a leader teammates naturally follow.

Smith made an impact with her defense, coming up with steals and quickly helping her team get organized on the offensive end. She showed good awareness when orchestrating the offense and finding ways to keep possessions moving. She also hustled for long rebounds and worked hard to create finishing opportunities around the basket.

Makayla is becoming a prominent two-way player. She is very fast with the ball once in the open court and has good use of her body to avoid the defense as she approaches the paint. In the half court setting she is best getting to the rim with a multitude of moves but can also knock down the deep ball with time and set feet. Defensively, she has grown the most over the years as she uses her scoring mind to anticipate her opponent’s counter moves, which keeps her sliding her feet and staying locked in.
