Pressure makes diamonds and one of Oklahoma’s brightest diamonds shined under the bright lights of State. Statement block in the first half? Check. Back breaking three pointers? Check. Powerful and agile drives? Check.
Johnson is a box office player, and even with the game starting at 9 AM, it was still a primetime performance. She finished with a stat line of 30 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals. And most importantly earning a semifinal contest on Thursday.

The focal point of Booker T Washington’s offense, finished with a team high 21 points. Including an 11 point third quarter that helped Booker T Washington gain momentum in putting away a frisky Durant team. It was a preview of what to come, as the nationally ranked prospect is expected to be the best player at the State Tournament. And she’ll have every opportunity to finish her high school

Big time players make the biggest plays when the lights are brightest, and that describes Johnson to a T. She scored a game high 23 points on only 12 shots from the field. Simply too fast and too strong when getting downhill. Either scored though contact or knocked down her free throws (7-8). There’s a lot of elite scorers in Oklahoma right now, but none might be better than Johnson at being fouled and still finishing. Special type of athlete, with a complete scoring game. Needless to say, Baylor is getting a good one.

Johnson is often simply too tall, too strong and too quick to be stopped. Has violent and sudden motions when she stops and pulls in the mid-range or from three. When she gets to the rim, she’s gritty and seems to relish contact as she plays with infectious energy. Scored a game high 20 points by scoring in a variety of ways. There are previous years, that Johnson would be the clear top dog. And even in a class full of stars, she continues to make a strong statement that she’s one of the brightest.

Johnson brings so much to the table and she falls into that “nightmare to defend” category because her handling of the ball can be hypnotizing to defenders, then you throw the turbo as she she explodes off the dribble to finish strongly and at times acrobatically after contact. Yeah, the body control has something to do with, so does her athleticism which she uses on both ends like “on the ball pressure” yet her “catch and shoot from outside was clicking

It was another signature performance for the athletic scoring guard. She’s simply too quick and strong at the rim, especially at her height and wingspan. Johnson almost single handily kept the Lady Hornets in the game, scoring well over half their points with a 29 point day. Even with all the defensive focus, she went 12-20 from the field. As she continues to refine her scoring package with her unique traits, she can be a special talent in a special Class of 2025 in Oklahoma.

The Baylor commit is a big time athlete, with a strong and skilled finishing game around the rim. She took over down the stretch, living at the rim and earning trips to the line. Where she went 14-19 from the charity stripe. Johnson finished with a big time 26 point and 11 rebound double double in the clutch performance that has her Lady Hornets a step closer to a Class 5A State Title.

Watching video recently of Marcayla, it was great to see that she still plays with that same joy and explosiveness that she did when I saw her a year or so ago, before my hiatus. Of course, in Coach Rabu Leyva’s offense, it’s hard not to have fun. Back then, about the same time she was being scouted and offered by Baylor, where she is now committed, I thought she might have been a little raw still. Working off of pure athleticism a lot more than most. I mean, yes, she was and is incredibly athletic. But, with time and even more and more training, she looks like an absolutely elite level basketball player. With even more time to go before she heads down to Waco, it will be fun to see Marcayla’s continued ascent, as well.

Baylor Commit! Long and athletic. She has a gritty – “get it out of the mud” type of game. She is highly aggressive with a motor that can carry the load for her team. She is not afraid of the moment and will attack gaps when they open up off the dribble. Her off ball-play is underrated because she utilizes so many ways to score off the catch. Pure jump shot with range and pull-up game is on point off the dribble into open space. Plays with passion and has fun in the court.
