Prep Girls Hoops was in the house to check out Yorktown (1-0) vs George Mason (0-1) as both were playing their second game of the season. Yorktown had a disappointing 5 win season a year ago while Mason went 22-7 defeating Yorktown twice by double digits.

George Mason’s coach Chris Carrico was a little optimistic heading into the game after losing four seniors from his state semifinal team starts three freshmen this year. The Patriots coach Devaughn Drayton is excited about this season having his division one senior Elizabeth Shean (Boston University) who is 100 points from 1000 and on pace to be the schools all time leading scorer by the end of the year.

The game started close as the teams seemed evenly matched despite the Patriots being so young and not having a player over six feet tall. It was a little back and forth until back too back baskets by Kathryn Belt scored all of her six points in the first quarter extended the score to 18-10 after one.

The second quarter started with a 3 pointer by senior Madeline Lacroix to cut the lead to five 18-13. Then a huge 12-0 run by Yorktown ballooned the score to 30-13 and the half ended with the Colonials comfortably ahead 33-16. Lacroix led the Mustangs in the half with 9 points while the Colonials had a more balanced scoring effort led by seniors Margaret Shipley and Shean both with 7 in the half. If there was anything for the Mustangs to build on at the half it would be that Shean had three fouls in the half and she’d have to exercise caution on defense.
Shipley picked up her third foul the start the second half but, It didn’t matter much as the Patriots took a 22 point lead into the final period up 50-28. At the end of the night, Yorktown made a statement that they may be the team to beat as Shipley finished with a game high 19 points and Shean added 16 for a convincing 62-37 victory.

The Patriots starting the season with two blowout wins will be tough as both Elizabeth Shean and Margaret Shipley can fill up the stat sheet. They will certainly win more than 5 games this season.

The Mustangs are young and scrappy and will hang around when the shots are falling. Freshman Zoraida Icabalceta is a real baller and will be the cornerstone as her career continues.
