What Did We Learn From The Oxon Hill vs Largo Game?

What Did We Learn From The Oxon Hill vs Largo Game?

What Did We Learn From The Oxon Hill vs Largo Game? In a game in which many believed to be a matchup between the two top teams in Prince Georges County the Oxon Hill Clippers visited the Largo Lions. Both teams have similar styles and love to pressure the ball defensively and the biggest difference in the two aesthetically is that the Lions have three players over six feet tall and the Clippers do have a single six foot plus player on their roster. The game started out with both teams going straight at each other and ending the first quarter in a 17-17 draw. The big takeaway from the quarter was that the Lions were in the double bonus with three minutes still remaining in the period. There have been many conspiracy theories about playing at Largo and one even published in the Washington Post years ago, although I'm not one to buy into conspiracies, the four times that I have been to a Largo home game over the years each opponent has reached the double bonus foul limit in the first quarter. As the game progressed and the Clippers settled down, it became who the better team that night would be as they went into the break with 39-26 halftime lead. The lead ballooned to 24 points heading into the final period and stayed that way until the final buzzer as Oxon Hill left the Lion's Den with a 69-45 victory. What Did We Learn? 5 Key Things: [caption id="attachment_21599" align="alignleft" width="137"] Aniya Wilson[/caption] Talk about prime time players, Oxon Hill has one in Aniya Wilson. The junior scored a game high 30 points, 13 in the critical second period that changed the tide of the game. She scored a variety of ways mostly attacking and finishing at the basket and knocking down free throws. She showed the ability to hit nice pull up jumpers in the mid-range area and even knocked down a three pointer. She was very good defensively and has good game IQ. [caption id="attachment_21602" align="alignleft" width="131"] Mossi Staples[/caption] Mossi Staples (Northeastern University) is a force to be reckoned with. Staples scored 17 points over a three quarter span. She is quick getting by defenders and to the basket before help arrives. She showed early her ability to knock down the three making the defense aware that they couldn't back off of her. The Clippers are eyeing a state championship this season and the senior will play a major part in whether or not they achieve it. [caption id="attachment_21603" align="alignleft" width="143"] Iyanna Warren[/caption] One of my favorite players to watch is senior Iyanna Warren (Howard University). Warren scored 14 points in the win for the Clippers to complete the big three putting them all in double digits. What wasn't counted were her assists as I saw close to ten during the game. She is a tremendously strong ball handler with the ability to take virtually anyone off of the dribble. She has great vision and nailed a couple of passes dead on from three quarters of the court away. At the point Iyanna guides the Clippers ship. [caption id="attachment_21604" align="alignright" width="119"] Vanessa Schwarzmann[/caption] Vanessa Schwarzmann was fun to watch. The junior ended with nine points but, watching her shoot the deep 3 was a thing of beauty. She shot effortlessly with great form and even her misses looked good rimming out. You had the feeling that every shot she took was going in, the Lions realized it as well and kept her closely guarded for most of the game. [caption id="attachment_21605" align="alignleft" width="150"] Alexia Hackett[/caption] Alexia Hackett is the first scoring option for the Lions. She led the team 13 points in the loss and was effective pushing the ball in attack mode in transition. She mostly scored in the lane attacking the basket but, showed her range for beyond the arc. She did most of her damage in the first quarter but will need to step things up in the rematch on January 29th if they expect to win the that one.
