Eight varsity teams and four junior varsity teams participated in the first annual 695Hoops All About The Girls Holiday Hoops event in PG county over the weekend. Henry Wise High School hosted this event in their impressive arena style gym in Upper Marlboro. The host school was joined by Westlake, St.Paul's and Old Mill in the Joe Rosendale division. The Tracey Carrington division featured Chesapeake AA, Atholton, Leonardtown and Dunbar. The Friday action saw Old Mill post an impressive 68 to 27 win over Westlake thanks to some dominating inside play by Sydney Faulcon who scored 18 points. Wise rallied in the second game after trailing big in the first half to St. Paul's for a 57-51 win. Atholton nipped Leonardtown 55-49 in a back and forth battle and Chesapeake closed the day with a 55-42 win over Dunbar thanks to 23 points by Haley Downin. This set us up for two championship games on Saturday. Wise and Old Mill squared off in the first championship game and it was a good one. Wise had some early mishaps and trailed 9-4 after a quarter but made a nice run to close the gap in the second. Old Mill senior Destiny Galloway had a late 7 point run to close the half to help the Patriots stake a 25-19 halftime lead. The Pumas made several runs in the second half but Old Mill answered each challenge with a timely bucket and pulled away late for a 64-49 win. Destiny Galloway and Sydney Faulcon (Niagara) both scored 14 points for the winners while Julia Bagnell scored 12 and Briana White added 10. Chesapeake completed the Anne Arundel county sweep by jumping out to a 15-1 on Atholton in the second championship contest of the day. Atholton was never able to recover from the early hole and went down 54-31. Chesapeake was led by Haley Downin who scored 14 points and Corrine Castle who added 13 points and 8 rebounds. Zhuri Cannon scored 8 points for Atholton. Some of the standouts from the event... Haley Downin, Chesapeake, Most Outstanding Player Haley scored 37 points in the two games and shot lights out from three point range. Corrine Castle, Chesapeake Corrine was deadly in the post area, finishing almost every time she got the ball in the paint. Morgan Gray, Chesapeake Morgan came up big in the championship game with 9 rebounds and 4 blocks. Katelyn Parker, Wise The senior wing filled the stat sheet for the host team. She was a force in both games. St. Bonaventure is getting a good one. Mesa Floyd, Wise Mesa's outside shooting helped the Pumas rally to beat St. Paul's on day one. Destiny Ryles, St. Paul's Destiny was electrifying in the open court and really fun to watch as usual. Ty'yanna Holly, Dunbar Ty led her team in scoring both games and shot well from 3 point range. Janelle Fields, Westlake Janelle was all over the court, rebounding, bringing the ball up, scoring and doing all the little things that do not show up on the stat sheet. Emma Vezzosi, Leonardtown Emma was solid in both games for her team. She scored and dished off penetration and got to the line multiple times. Alex Hargrett, Atholton Alex is a gritty and smart point guard. She set the tone defensively for her team and made tons of hustle plays. She is definitely a leader on this team. Tamara Bush, Leonardtown Ms. Bush had a solid tournament and finished strong with a 16 point, 14 rebound performance. Destiny Galloway, Old Mill Destiny was clutch in the championship game and played well overall. She made some big buckets at key moments. Sydney Faulcon, Old Mill Sydney was dominant in the paint, forcing teams to double her which allowed her teammates to get open looks. She'll be a big contributor at Niagara University.
