Megan Meyer, it turns out, is as good as advertised, and she buried the ‘Riders before this one could really even get started, scoring five quick points in the first couple of minutes and spurring a 27-10 first quarter win for the Mohawks.
A future Iowa Hawkeyes point guard, Meyer finished with a game-high 27 points in the blowout win. It was clear why the supremely skilled floor general is the state’s leading scorer at the 4A ranks.
The Mohawks star, though, got plenty of help in the win. Mason City made a season-high 14 3s; four of them coming from Meyer, another four coming from Jaeda Whitner, and two each from Ali Rood and Sami Miller. Anna Lensing and Anna Deets each hit one.
The Roughriders (6-7) were led by Sanna Smith’s 12 points, Minnesota recruit Grace Cumming chipped in with 11 of her own. They’ll try and rebound Friday night at Des Moines East.
Mason City improved to 10-4 with the win and will try for 11-4 Friday night when it hosts Southeast Polk.

The Prospects
Megan Meyer, 5’7 PG, 2019 (MC)
PGHIA’s 3rd-ranked prospect in 2019, Meyer certainly lived up to the billing in this one. She’s as skilled of a player as there is in the state, and her ability to blow by her opponent with speed and handle, plus hit the 3-ball, makes her an extremely dangerous threat on the offensive end. She’s athletic and nimble and breezes into the lane after a quick and effective crossover. She’s a highly skilled precision shooter who is capable of burying inferior teams before they even stand a chance.
Anna Deets, 5’9 G/F, 2020 (MC)
The Mohawks’ second-leading scorer was well under her season average of 13.7 points per game in this one, but it was clear to see how she’s able to rack up the high scoring numbers. She’s a got quick release from deep, and is a sniper from beyond the arc. She only hit one 3-ball in this one, but her 49 percent 3-point percentage this season speaks volumes.
Jaeda Whitner, 5’4 SG, 2020 (MC)
She canned four 3s in this one, and was showcasing a butter stroke from beyond the arc in the process. She didn’t make any other field goals other than her 3s, but for the second-best 3-point shooting team in 4A, that’ll work.
Jada Williams, 5’8 G/F, 2022 (MC)
Just a freshman, Williams gave us a glimpse into the future for Mason City, and she’s got a chance to be a really good one. She’s tall and lengthy, and has the ability to put the ball on the deck and play from the perimeter. She hasn’t shot the ball well from deep this season, but did well in this one to get closer to the hoop and put in her buckets that way.
Sanaa Smith, 5’5 PG, 2019 (DMR)
She certainly wasn’t the tallest girl on the floor, but she was very aggressive, and effective offensively still. She scored a team-high 12 for the ‘Riders, and that’s slightly above her season average of 10.4 points per game. She does well to get into the lane and probe the defense, and shoots it well, too. She made all four of her free-throws in the third quarter and connected on a 3-ball in the fourth.
Grace Cumming, 6’4 C, 2019 (DMR)
Iowa’s 5th-ranked 2019 prospect, Cumming was quiet in this one, scoring 11 points (which is right around her season average), but was showing a nice short to mid-range jumper and doing well with her footwork around the rim. At 6-foot-4 she’s one of the state’s best shot-blockers, that showed in this one.
Alesha Henderson, 6′ F, 2019 (DMR)
A senior with good size and nice length, Henderson was crashing the glass, particularly the offensive glass and handles it well for a forward. With her size, effort and ability, she’ll be a very key player down the stretch for the ‘Riders.
