Prospect Spotlight: Avery Fried (2021)
In a loaded 2021 class in Iowa, there are a couple players that really stand out across the state. There is a collection of guards, wings, and posts that have the potential to be playing at the DI level. One of those players is Bondurant-Farrar wing Avery Fried. Fried is a very versatile post player who has the capability to be a point forward at the next level. She does a lot of things very well and we have taken notice of her overall game.
A slick lefty, Fried will always be a player that is tough to guard due to her craftiness. She has the ability to play on the outside or slide into the lane to score points. Her game is elevated by the fact that she has the innate ability to shoot the ball, score with her back to the basket, and score in transition. Her offensive versatility is something that colleges will really like to see. Not to be lost in her offensive ability, is her ability on the other side of the ball.
Fried has the ability to get her hands on the ball defensively as a high level. This is shown by her 29 steals and team leading 13 blocks this past year. She has a knack to cause havoc on the defensive end and teams are forced to try and play away from her. This season she had a 1:1 assist to turnover ratio which is very impressive for a sophomore post player. Fried had just 29 turnovers this year, lowest on her team for those of who played 10 or more games.
For now, Fried is content on working on her game and raising it to the next level so that she can get into that Division I conversation. Our 15th ranked prospect in the class is already receiving NAIA and Division III interest. I expect her to start getting much more real interest as we get into the summer. Scoring 14.9 points a game this past season has helped her visibility and that scoring total is likely to rise next year.
“I am working on expanding my game by using my non-dominant hand more often,” Fried said. “I am also working on becoming a better defensive player.”
Fried has a goal of playing college basketball. The 5’11 sophomore also has a goal of becoming conference champions and playing in the state tournament. She will be running with All Iowa Attack this summer and will look to further her game as her second to last season of AAU gets underway.
