April Madness: AAU/Club Spring Preview (Part 1)
This is the busy time of year as the high school season has ended, the seniors look to their futures and the new crop gets ready to earn scholarship offers in the spring evaluation. The DMV has a long history of putting together high level teams with extraordinary talent, this season won’t be any different but, will add a twist with several new programs forming and looking to make an impact in the recruiting scene. Nike, adidas have been around for a while with their EYBL and Gauntlet/Rise circuits and Under Armor has recently made a huge investment to be a major player on the girls side of basketball with UA Rise. There are also some really good programs that aren’t under a shoe company umbrella that should be watched closely. Prep Girls Hoops has dug in and will preview teams and players to keep an eye on heading into the spring evaluation period. What do we know now? Team Takeover 17u EYBL Team Takeover has set some pretty high standards on both the boys and girls side of basketball. The girls in its 6th season as a Nike program has produced several McDonald’s and Jordan Brand Classic All American’s as well as Gatorade Players of the Year and All Met Selections. Coach James "our program has grown rapidly and takes pride in providing expanding opportunities for girls to participate in the sport" April Upcoming Tournaments: 6-7: WPA Bruins Spring Tip-Off NJ Sparks Classic 26-28*: Boo Williams Nike Invitational - EYBL I Players to Watch: 2020 Angel Reese 6’2 2020 Madison Scott 6’2 2020 Mir McLean 5’10 2020 Liatu King 5'11 2020 Stephanie Ouderkirk 6'2 2020 Haley Sabol 6'2 2020 Christyan Reed 6'4 2021 Maria Gakdeng 6'3 2021 Laila Jewett 5'9 2020 Chay Hayes 5'8 2021 Aniya Gourdine D.C. Premier 17u UA Rise D.C. Premier has had an extremely successful boys program sporting Under Armor since it’s inception. This is the inaugural season for its girls program and DCP is coming strong. Coach Stef Haskins is a veteran to the girls game and Director Gina Wilson knows what it takes to build a top program. Coach Haskins “our goal is to offer another home for kids to play high level basketball, get development and the opportunity to play in front of college coaches. April Upcoming Tournaments: 6-7: WPA Bruins Spring Tip-Off 19-20: DMV Elite 26-28*: UA Rise I Players to Watch: 2020 Tyinhia Skinner 2020 Paris McBride 2020 Jalen Douglas 2020 Ava Robinson 2021 LO’r Mputu 2022 Benie Lundu BWSL 17u Nike EYBL Boo Williams Summer League (BWSL) has been a Nike affiliate since 1995. The have consistently produced top teams and players over the years drawing players from the Tidewater Area as well as other parts of Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina. April Upcoming Tournaments: 26-28*: Boo Williams Nike Invitational - EYBL I Players to watch: 2020 Diamond Johnson 2020 Elizabeth Martino 2021 Jada Walker 2021 Azahia James 2021 Jessica Timmons 2021 Taylor Gibson Fairfax Stars 17u Nike EYBL The Fairfax Stars have been one of the nations top girls programs for 24 years. They have alumni playing at the highest level and produced more All American's over the years than any other girls program. The Fairfax Stars are starting their 14th year as a Nike affiliated program and are the largest basketball organization in Northern Virginia. April Upcoming Tournaments: 6-7: Think Pink Tournament 26-28*: Boo Williams Nike Invitational - EYBL I Players to watch: Kaniya Harris Nycerra Minnis GTS Fusion 17u UA Rise GTS Fusion re-emerges under the Under Armor umbrella and are looking to shake things up with four teams in it's inaugural season. Tim and Katie Fudd have played and coached at the highest level and bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise. Coach Tim Fudd "We are excited to offer opportunities to develop players skill and IQ under the Fusion brand and are looking forward to where this journey will lead." April Upcoming Tournaments: USJN -Philly Under Armor Spooky Nook Players to watch: 2021 Azzi Fudd 2022 Gia Cooke 2021 Brianna Scott 2020 Elizabeth Dufrane
