Davenport Assumption 6-foot center Chaney Steffen is an up-and-coming post in Iowa, and can be seen playing up a grade this spring with Iowa Prep 16U.
Steffen loves hoops more than the typical high schooler and it’s her passion for the sport that motivates her to want to continually evolve and improve.
“Basketball is such an outlet for me, like if I was having a bad day at school and I wasn’t feeling it, I knew I had basketball practice right after school and that would help me,” said Steffen.
She played both JV and varsity as a freshman, gaining valuable experience as a true post player. Now, she’s learning to diversify her skill-set as a forward and center with Iowa Prep.
“I started playing more as a four with Iowa Prep, and was shooting some outside shots and I usually don’t do that. So it’s already helped my game so much with being more comfortable with the ball outside,” said Steffen.
“My coaches at Assumption helped me so much with my post play and different moves and footwork and everything and that helped a lot.”
Steffen still has plenty of time left to develop her skill-set before perhaps playing at the next level. That’s the ultimate goal, to play high-level college hoops.
“My ultimate goal is to get a Division I offer, I would love to play in college. And I see myself being more of a post and being the five for a team,” said Steffen.
She added: “I would love to keep working on my outside shot as well. I feel that if you can be a really good post player and have the right moves, but also be able to shoot anywhere on the perimeter, then you can be unstoppable and it’d make it harder for other players to guard.”
After a successful tryout with Iowa Prep last month, program director Tim Schuring asked Steffen if she’d want to play up a grade with the 16U unit. Steffen happily obliged.
“I’ve enjoyed it so much and everyone on the team is so passionate about the game and so competitive. And it’s so much more fast-paced and I really like it. I feel like it’s going to help me so much with my game and with my high school season next year,” said Steffen, who hopes to possibly see some early college interest come this spring and summer.
“To be recruited as a sophomore or even a freshman would be amazing. When I see the colleges at the games it will be amazing and it’ll make me want to push my game more.”
