Her ability to slip past her defender and make plays in the lane, or step outside and knock down shots, help her to be one of the top Seniors in the State.
While Whitney Young may have fallen short of their postseason goals last season, Kayla sees it as a building block for what she hopes is an even more successful Senior year.
“We started out pretty good but the season didn’t end the way we wanted it to. We were a pretty young team, with most of our starters being Juniors and Sophomores. We only lost two or three Seniors, so we’ll be back.”
Like Kayla, several of her Young teammates are members of the Mac Irvin Lady Fire AAU organization, which gives them a chance to play together year-round to continuously build chemistry. The Lady Fire are a top AAU team in the Midwest and play one of the toughest schedules. To say these girls will be battle tested for this next season would be an understatement.
As mentioned earlier, Kayla is the type of Point Guard that can run the offense and make things happen for her teammates or take control of the game by hitting jump shots or converting at the hoop.
When asked what she saw as her strengths, Kayla said “My strength would be how I control my team. My team goes off my energy, so its important for me to keep the tempo up, especially with my defense.”
Being a 5’4’’ PG, matching up against bigger Guards on both ends of the floor can sometimes be a challenge. Kayla is the type of person who won’t back down from anyone and takes those challenges head-on.
“Since I’m a smaller Guard, I’m really working on my shot. I need to be able to hit shots at the next level, so that is something I am always trying to get better at.”
What is going on in recruiting?
“I have four offers from Texas A&M, UNLV, Syracuse, and University of Missouri”.
Kayla is an absolute gamer and probably one of the more under-recruited players in the state. Though she does have impressive offers and will ultimately choose a school that fits her best, I look for more coaches to come calling later this summer.
