Prospect Spotlight: Katelyn Stanley (2020)
There are a few kids in Iowa who are exceptional dual sport athletes with soccer and basketball, one of those such players is Katelyn Stanley. Stanley scored 10.7 points a game this past basketball season. During the ongoing soccer season she has scored six goals and has accumulated 15 points. Stanley is a 5’8 wing who is a very pertinent piece to the success of Bishop Heelan. This past season they made it to the state tournament where they fell to eventual champion North Scott. Stanley was instrumental in their season and scored 21 points in their two state tournament games.
“Coming back from my knee injury was hard because I had limited minutes but I got better every game,” Stanley said. “We played so well together as a team all season.”
This summer Stanley is running with South Dakota Attack and having a good year with them. There is a ton of talent on the squad and Stanley has been fitting in well. She is playing in front of a lot of college coaches and should start to see her stock rise even more. Stanley is one of the few Iowa based players who is playing on an out of state squad this summer.
“This AAU season has been great so far,” Stanley said. “It has been a really good experience coming off the bench and playing with really good players. My teammates know the game really well.”
Stanley is hard at work on her game this summer. She is working on her jumper and 3-point shooting the most this year. This past season she shot the ball at a 30 percent clip from behind the arc and 41 percent from the floor. If Stanley starts to develop and raise these percentages a little she could become an unstoppable player on the circuit.
“I want to get in the gym as much as I can this summer to be ready for my high school season next year,” Stanley said. “Getting back to state and ending the season with a win is the most important goal.”
Stanley is getting some college interest already and a big end to the summer season could help her recruitment even more. Nevertheless her focus is on winning a state championship this upcoming season with Bishop Heelan. You can be sure that Stanley will have multiple options for the next level. With a host of scholarship schools in pursuit, expect to see Stanley pulling in some offers over the next few months.
