Continue ReadingAplington-Parkersburg used their pressure to cruise to a 58-44 win in their opening game of the season over BCLUW. With the loss, BCLUW falls to 2-1 on the year. The home team came out quickly and jumped out to a 4-0 lead but after a 17-4 run to finish the first quarter, the route was on for A-P. Megan Johnson, a senior guard, was hitting early and often for A-P as she had 11 points on 3-for-5 shooting from behind the arc in the first half. A big second quarter propelled A-P into the half with a 35-14 lead.
BCLUW controlled the ball better in the second half of the game and outscored A-P 30-23 but they couldn’t overcome the turnovers early in the game. A-P had 31 steals in the game and BCLUW turned the ball over more than 40 times. It was a rough game for both teams but it gives each group something to work on in the coming days.
MVP: Sophia Jungling | 2020 | Aplington-Parkersburg
Jungling was all over the floor all night long in this one. She was flying around both offensively and defensively making plays for her team. Jungling scored 20 points and filled the stat sheet also grabbing four rebounds, grabbing six steals, and dishing off five assists. She was the main reason that her team won the game.
Best Offensive Player: Madison Ubben | 2020 | BCLUW
Ubben was unstoppable on the inside this evening. Once she got the ball on the block she was going to go up and score it. She finished with 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor. Ubben showcased her fluidity down in the post today and she also showed off the ability to pass out of the high post well.
Best Defensive Player: Sophia Jungling | 2020 | Aplington-Parkersburg
Jungling was tasked with guarding BCLUW’s leading scorer (14.0 PPG) and she did a really nice job on her holding her scoreless in the game. After Jungling was pulled out, she hit a 3-pointer late in the game. Jungling had six steals and was pressuring the ball all day long really well. She’s a hassle to face since she goes all out all the time.
Best Shooter: Megan Johnson | 2020 | Aplington-Parkersburg
Johnson got off to a hot start in the game and had 11 points at the half. She didn’t score any in the second half but was instrumental in the start of the game that her team had. She finished 3-of-6 from behind the arc but started the game 3-of-4. Her shot looks a lot better than last year and I think she’ll turn into a very consistent outside shooter this season.
Best Shot Blocker: Betula Messerly | 2021 | BCLUW
Messerly struggled on the offensive end in this one but on the defensive end she blocked a couple of shots as Aplington-Parkersburg was looking to make a run. She was able to come from behind and get her hand on the ball without fouling the offensive player on consecutive possessions. A solid defensive effort from her.
Best Rebounder: Madison Ubben | 2020 | BCLUW
Ubben was a stalwart in the post all game long for BCLUW. She pulled in 13 rebounds in the game and showed her ability to high point the ball and bring down the rebound. Ubben had a tremendous game on both ends but was critical on the defensive end pulling in rebounds for her team.
Best Non-Starter: Ellie Etjen | 2022 | Aplington-Parkersburg
Etjen came off the bench and played a very nice game. She had four points and grabbed nine rebounds. Four of those rebounds were offensive and all of them led to second-chance points. I really liked seeing her aggressive once she got the ball and she was stellar in the post defending the entry pass. She added in four steals as well.
Best Motor: Allison Engle | 2022 | BCLUW
Engle was solid in this one even though she didn’t get into the stat sheet a lot. She was held down offensively but as one of the few ballhandlers for BCLUW, she did a fine job handling the ball as Aplington-Parkersburg hounded her. She’s a really intriguing player with how hard she plays and her size.
Best Intangibles: Peyton Pekarek | 2020 | BCLUW
Pekarek was a vocal player on the floor tonight for BCLUW. As one of the seniors on the floor, she was able to keep her team in the game the entire time. She was 3-for-3 in the game and finished with six points and two assists. I really liked what she brought on the floor tonight even though she didn’t blow you away scoring the ball.
Best Coaching Decision: Aplington-Parkersburg goes to a press
Aplington-Parkersburg continued to press throughout the game and it worked really well for them. They came away with 31 steals and everyone was getting involved in tipping passes and starting the break in transition. This is going to be their bread and butter this year and after one game, it seems as if they can ride it back to the Well.
