Darrionna Howard — Clayton
Having began playing basketball three years ago, this season was like watching Bambi take his first steps for Howard — which is scary considering how she dominated the varsity level this season. The 6-foot-1 freshman put up 15.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.7 steals, 1.1 assists and 1.4 blocks per game. She was most impressive on the defensive end where her long arms, quick feet and athleticism really shined. She can guard the other team’s best player, no matter the position, because of her great strength to match post players and length to bother guards. On the offensive end, she has not shot a single three pointer, but she did shoot the midrange with good form. I do believe she will develop a three point shot before her senior year. Her foot work and post moves are the most polished I’ve ever seen from a high school basketball player. She has the chance to be the best player in her class by her senior year. She will be running with the Carolina Flames this summer.
Kayla Robertson — Smithfield-Selma
Robertson had a strong freshman season this year. She helped her team win seven more games this season than last, plus showed that she can score at the varsity level from all three levels. The 5-foot-10 freshman averaged 10.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 2.1 steals per game. She should play even better with the Carolina Flames this summer as she will not have to guard post players every game for her team to be successful.
Amiaya Hall — East Duplin
Her ability to get downhill along with her unusually high arc on her jump shot make her a problem to guard. The 5-foot-10 wing showed to be a potent offensive force for the 20-5 East Duplin Panthers. She made her money inside the arc while shooting 46 percent from two to lead her team in scoring with 12.1 points per game. Her long arms and high motor also helped her rebound and get steals at a high rate as she led the team in rebounding with 8.7 per game and was second on the team with 2.3 steals per game,
Sage Farmer — Cleveland
Farmer brings a gritty toughness to the floor. She’s high energy, hustles for loose balls and is competitive. On the offensive end, she’s a really solid spot up shooter and as she gets stronger, I believe her jump shot percentage will go up. Defensively, she has the ability to terrorize passing lanes and make ball handlers uncomfortable as she averaged 2 steals per game.
