The Chargers led by as many as 12 in the second half and nine in the fourth quarter, but the Villains came back to tie the game with less than a minute left.
Bishop McGuinness’ comeback was led by the play of 2023 guards Tate Chappell and Charley Chappell. While the Villians struggled from the field, these two freshman did everything they could to keep their team in striking distance. Charley scored eight points and made some crucial layups in the fourth quarter to help her team cut into the deficit. Tate led all scorers with 16 points and a lot of her damage was done in the mid-range game.
However, it wasn’t meant to be for the Villians because of Old Dominion commit Skylah Travis. With 2.6 seconds left, she scored the winning basket to put the Chargers in the state championship game. Travis came into this regional championship averaging over 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. Despite only having nine points, she was a force defensively with three blocks and made the play to push the Weldon winning streak to 27 games.
All 42 Charger points were scored by their starting five including a team high 10 points from 2020 guard Tecara Ashe. Weldon advances to next Saturday’s 1A state championship against Murphy High School at NC State’s Reynolds Coliseum. It’ll be their first appearance in the state title game since 2005.
The Chargers will take on Murphy after they survived a comeback attempt from Mitchell in the 1A West final to remain undefeated at 30-0. Murphy is looking for their first state title since 1996, so expect this to one of many great games next weekend.
