Of course, it all begins and ends with Newell-Fonda, the defending two-time Class 1A state champions who have not lost in two years.
But the TLC is far from a one-horse race.
The conference features contenders Emmetsburg, South Central Calhoun, Pocahontas Area and others, all of whom have some elite players.
Here’s a look at the Top-5 players from the 2019-20 season in the Twin Lakes Conference:
Macy Sievers Macy Sievers 5'7" | SG Newell-Fonda | 2022 State IA , Newell-Fonda (2022)
Part of an incredible youth movement for Newell-Fonda, sophomore Macy Sievers Macy Sievers 5'7" | SG Newell-Fonda | 2022 State IA scored a team-high 395 points this past year, averaging 14.6 per game.
Sievers was an incredible 65 percent shooter from the field, 40 percent from the 3-point line and 71 percent at the free throw stripe. She also had a team-high 122 assists, 99 rebounds, 89 steals and even eight blocks.
Analysis: In just her second season of high school basketball, Sievers made a statement. She had a 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, and was just as effective on the offensive glass (40 rebounds) as defensive (59). The sky is truly the limit for the talents of this Mustang moving forward.
Madison Hough Madison Hough 5'5" | PG Graettinger-Terril | 2020 State IA , GTRA (2020)
When you lead the TLC in scoring, you are doing something great. GTRA senior Madison Hough Madison Hough 5'5" | PG Graettinger-Terril | 2020 State IA averaged 20.5 points per night this past year, recording a total of 472 on the season.
Hough hoisted by an astonishing 457 field goal attempts, including 219 from the 3-point line. She made 72 triples and was also a sound 74-for-103 from the free throw line.
Analysis: The 5-foot-5 Hough also grabbed 88 rebounds, recorded 90 steals and dished out 73 assists, making her biggest impact in her final chance with GTRA. She will continue her career at Iowa Lakes Community College in the fall.
Molly Schany Molly Schany 6' | PF Emmetsburg | 2020 State IA , Emmetsburg (2020)
A 1,000-point scorer for her career, Molly Schany Molly Schany 6' | PF Emmetsburg | 2020 State IA finished second in the TLC in scoring in rebounds. Of her 183 total boards, 87 of them came on the offensive end.
Schany averaged just over 18 points a night, shooting 60 percent from the floor. She was also effective when sent to the charity stripe, sinking 84 of her 122 attempts.
Analysis: The 6-foot Schany dominated inside the paint this past winter, using her skills and techniques to overcome nearly every night. Schany also surpassed 1,000 kills this past fall on the volleyball court for the E-Hawks.
Ella Larsen, Newell-Fonda (2021)
One of the “older” players for Dick Jungers and Newell-Fonda, junior Ella Larsen averaged over 10 points per game while leading the team in rebounds with 149.
Larsen was a 51 percent shooter from the field and knocked down 27 three-pointers. She also finished with 116 steals and 112 assists, one of just a handful of players in the state to surpass triple digits in both categories.
Analysis: A multi-sport standout like many from Newell-Fonda, Larsen is in store for a big senior year coming up after another breakout season this past winter on the hardwood.
Kaylee Shivers Kaylee Shivers 6'1" | PF Pocahontas Area | 2020 State IA , Pocahontas Area (2020)
Pocahontas Area featured a unique mix of experienced players with newcomers, and Kaylee Shivers Kaylee Shivers 6'1" | PF Pocahontas Area | 2020 State IA handled the role of senior leader alongside three others. Shivers led the TLC in rebounds with 192, averaging nine per night.
Shivers was the leading scorer for the Indians at 12.5 per game, shooting 47 percent from the field. She also had a team-high 29 blocks to go along with 51 steals and 32 assists.
Analysis: The Indians went as Shivers did this past year, as the senior was a strong force on the offensive end. A multi-sport athlete, she’ll look to shine again on the track this spring.
