These are the players that are trusted by their teams to be the primary ball-handler and often run their team’s offense. That is a lot of responsibility to put on younger players, but everyone on this list has not only handled that responsibility but excelled with it. The fact that several of these players take on that responsibility for elite teams makes it even more impressive.
Triniti Ralston Triniti Ralston 5'7" | PG Sacred Heart | 2023 State KY , Sacred Heart- Speaking of elite teams, Sacred Heart was considered the team to beat for much of last season, and Ralston was a major part of that. Not only did she fill the role of a traditional point guard with her top-notch ball-handling and vision, she also excelled off the ball as a secondary option on offense. She contributed to the Valkyries’ excellent team defense as well. This versatility should serve her well as she transitions into the role of go-to player over the next few years.
Abby Holtman Abby Holtman 5'11" | SF Ryle | 2023 State KY , Ryle- Filling much the same role with Ryle as Ralston did with Sacred Heart, Holtman did a great job filling her role working with some of the top players in the state. She ran the offense when necessary, exploding with bursts of scoring and playmaking, but also knew when to take a backseat, doing well as a spot-up shooter and rebounding at an excellent rate given her size and position. She has the skills, maturity, and hustle to step up as an elite player going forward.
Macy Runner Macy Runner 5'6" | PG Nelson County | 2023 State KY , Nelson County- The primary job of a guard is to create offense, and that is something Runner does extremely well. She lives up to her name by getting out in transition, using her strong vision and passing ability as well as a nice scoring touch at the rim to create points. In the half-court, she can get penetration to score at the rim or knock down shots from outside. Runner has all the skills to be one of the top playmakers in the state.
Desaine Mhango Desaine Mhango 5'4" | PG Male | 2023 State KY , Male- Like several players on this list, Mhango has offensive explosiveness that sets her up well for the years to come. She has a quick first step and plenty of athleticism to get inside and finish. She’s also shown a nice touch from outside. If she can continue to develop her vision and consistency, Mhango has all of the traits and skills required of an elite player.
