The Class of 2022 is big on elite talent. Girls like LeAsia Matthews, Khalen Williams, Trinity Smith, Tamia Harris, and Ayanna Williams are added with a top-heavy class. While the Class of 2022 might have a lot of talent hidden, it is definitely much deeper class in which many colleges of all levels throughout the Southeast will find their key pieces to make them successful in the mid to late 2020s. Below is a look at five individuals who performed at a high level throughout their Sophomore seasons, yet who are somewhat unknown on a statewide level to this point. There were many more we could have chosen from, so it was tough to settle on just these five.
LeAsia Matthews 5-6 G, Fayetteville Christian School Matthews is a guard who likes to push the ball in transition, able to score while in traffic, plays a score-first role from the lead guard spot, and scores in many ways. She has great speed, quickness, and solid all-around athleticism. She’s also a nice perimeter shooter who can make open rhythm jumper consistently. This season for LeAsia Matthew, she acted as their starting combo guard, helping lead them to the Semi final round in the state playoffs. Matthews averaged 11.1 points, 3.0 assists, and 3.6 rebounds as a Varsity Sophomore.
Khalen Williams, 5”6 SG Villiage Christian Academy.
Williams she has speed, and strong defense that is tenacious. Williams can pick up just about any opponent on the floor and guard them 94 feet. She is a nice athlete with speed, she pursues lose balls, and she’s not afraid to sacrifice her body for the team. She is a deep threat from the three point arc, able a Division-I guard. She has a wiry long frame, she’s a really nice athlete in all directions, plus she is versatile skillfully. She can handle the ball and run offense at times, but she’s also a capable shooter and a very good scorer at all levels. This year, she was selected to the All conference team,
Tamia Harris , 5”4 PG EE Smith H.S.
Harris help lead the Bulldogs to a league best 31-1 and a sweep of the conference and tournament titles. She came up big in the Region game helping the Bulldog reach the state title game with 16 pts as she held her own. She is a scrappy, active guard that is still fairly athletic guard prospect. She is quick, good hands, and she has a smooth touch from beyond the arc. She is developing but is improving her game by the day. but she has such a commanding presence and great upside, that people better take notice of her soon. Definitely a top college prospect.
Ayanna Williams , 5-10 SF, Seventy First H.S.
Williams, a strong, athletic forward who runs the floor well North/South. She can push the ball up the floor when need be. Has a little nice shot from the field, and she has a strong toughness and plays with some physicality. It took her a handful of games to get acclimated this season, but once she did, she finished at 11.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. She should earned many offers when the time comes.
