What would we see this spring if these young men were hitting the hardwood? Every spring we see some breakout players, and without doubt, we would see that again this year.
We will take a look at 4 sophomores that I feel would have been likely candidates to have breakout seasons this spring. These could be players raising their rank as prospects, jumping a level in the minds of scouts and coaches, or even seemingly coming out from nowhere.

Hypothetical Grassroots Season Breakouts – Sophomores
Kaliese Christopher Kaliese Christopher 5'11" | SF East Kentwood | 2021 State MI (SF, East Kentwood)
Christopher has done a great job defining her game over the last year and she would have put it on display this spring. She’s put a focus on her defense and it’s paying dividends. Christopher attacks the passing lanes, forces turnovers and turns them into easy offense.
Emma Cooke Emma Cooke 6'1" | PF Okemos | 2021 State MI (PF, Okemos)
Cooke is a very talented post player and it felt like she was on the cusp of hitting another level during high school season. She’s a big asset on the defensive end and is developing a solid offensive game. Cooke’s growth as a player and prospect may have taken off this spring.
Jenna Harrison Jenna Harrison 5'9" | SG Kent City | 2021 State MI (SG, Kent City)
Harrison was half of a lights out 3 point shooting backcourt at Kent City. She didn’t play grassroots basketball last year, so we were all looking forward to seeing her scorch the nets in the spring. Harrison has next level talent and she would have proved that this grassroots season.
Kayla Rutledge Kayla Rutledge CG Troy | 2021 State MI (CG, Troy)
Rutledge has always been loaded with talent on the basketball court. She’s a solid ball handler and a very efficient player that can play on or off the ball. I feel like Rutledge was on the verge of making a lot of noise this spring.
Laila Vincent Laila Vincent PF Kalamazoo Central | 2021 State MI (PF, Kalamazoo Central)
Vincent was really impressive this high school season, giving Kalamazoo Central a threat in the post on a team that already has young perimeter stars. Vincent proved that she’s a star in her own right. She was a double-double threat and would have been this spring as well.
