Next year, those players who recently completed their junior seasons will be counted on as team leaders, and the TLC has a strong group of them.
Here’s a look at some of the top members of the class of 2021 in the TLC:
Maggie Walker, Newell-Fonda (2021)
Three of the four leading scorers for the two-time defending Mustangs were juniors last year, led by Maggie Walker. She averaged 13 points per game, leading Newell-Fonda with 39 made 3-pointers.
Walker shot almost 48 percent from the floor and was also second on the team with 104 rebounds, adding 92 steals and 57 assists.
Analysis: It’s quite incredible that the Mustangs are coming off back-to-back unbeaten seasons, yet return nearly their entire team intact, including the talented Walker.
Maty Quirk, East Sac County (2021)
One of the top scorers in the conference, Maty Quirk led the Raiders at 14 points per game. She also had a team-high 85 steals to go along with 123 rebounds and 49 assists.
Analysis: An improvement from deep after shooting making just 16 triples last year could really allow Quirk to boost her overall scoring.
Taylor Krager, Sioux Central (2021)
A 12-point-a-night scorer last year, Taylor Krager will be looked upon for even more production as a senior-to-be.
Krager shot 40 percent from the floor and got to the free throw line 118 times, making 88 of them. She also tied for the team lead with 88 rebounds, adding 70 assists, 50 steals and 21 blocks – numbers that all led the Rebels.
Analysis: Krager posted a strong all-around year, and Sioux Central will be asking for even more out of her next year.
Bailey Sievers, Newell-Fonda (2021)
The second piece to the returning trio of juniors for Mustang head coach Dick Jungers, Bailey Sievers posted 10 points per game. She shot 53 percent from the field and was the most active player in getting to the free throw line with 94 attempts.
Sievers also added 97 rebounds, 59 assists and 54 steals, one of four players to go over 90 rebounds, 50 assists and 50 steals for Newell-Fonda this past winter.
Analysis: Sievers will be looking to provide leadership on a team seeking a three-peat on the hardwood.
Ella Larsen, Newell-Fonda (2021)
A multi-sport all-stater, Ella Larsen led the Mustangs with 149 rebounds and 116 steals. She was also one of just a handful of players in the state to produce 100-plus steals and assists, dishing out 112 dimes.
Larsen added 10 points per game, shooting 51 percent from the field, 34 percent from the 3-point line and 61 percent at the charity stripe.
Analysis: With super sophomore Macy Sievers Macy Sievers 5'7" | SG Newell-Fonda | 2022 State IA , Larsen, Maggie Walker and Bailey Sievers form an incredibly talented returning nucleus for the Mustangs.
Abbie Schany, Emmetsburg (2021)
After Molly Schany Molly Schany 6' | PF Emmetsburg | 2020 State IA ended her senior year leading the E-Hawks in scoring and rebounding, another Schany, Abbie, will be looking to take her spot.
Abbie Schany posted almost 11 points per game last year, knocking down 23 triples. She was second on the team with 99 rebounds and also led with 69 assists and 45 steals.
Analysis: While Molly Schany Molly Schany 6' | PF Emmetsburg | 2020 State IA was an inside threat, Abbie Schany gets it done from the outside. She directed the offense as the point guard and was a top 3-point threat.
