Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2023’s who need to be on your radar.
Molly Stamp – F – Springville
Springville’s Molly Stamp had no troubles stepping in and making an impact as a freshman this past winter.
Stamp was the top scorer, led the region in assists, was second in rebounds, first in steals and third in blocks among all ninth-graders in the region for the Orioles, who finished 20-5 and reached the regional championship round.
At just over seven points and four rebounds per game, Stamp shot 46.5 percent from the field and 42 percent from the 3-point line.
Bree Shaull – Belle Plaine
Belle Plaine flirted with the .500 line this winter, ending the year 10-12 following a first round exit from the postseason.
Freshman Bree Shaull was part of a major youth movement, as the roster for the Plainsmen featured just one senior.
Shaull knocked down a team-high 22 three-pointers, finishing with 147 total points, 69 rebounds, 29 steals and 21 assists.
Mia Boulton Mia Boulton 5'3" | SG Montezuma | 2023 State IA – G – Montezuma
It was a memorable year for Montezuma, as the Bravettes reached the Class 1A elite eight before falling to Saint Ansgar at state.
Newcomer Mia Boulton Mia Boulton 5'3" | SG Montezuma | 2023 State IA was a key reserve on the 23-win team, scoring 123 points with 43 rebounds, 35 assists and 14 steals.
Montezuma graduates three key seniors and a handful of others, meaning more will be expected out of Boulton next winter.
Macy Schmidt – F – Tri-County
Tri-County experienced plenty of bumps this past year, but they also provided valuable on-the-court experience to players like freshman Macy Schmidt.
Schmidt led the team with 111 total points, doing most of her damage from inside the 3-point line. She also had a team-high 137 rebounds, adding in 28 steals and 26 blocks.
With a season under her belt, Schmidt should be primed for even bigger numbers in the coming seasons.
Macie McDonald – G – Keota
It was all-hands-on-deck for Keota this year, as the roster was just six players deep.
That, though, meant plenty of playing time for newcomers such as freshman Macie McDonald, who ended the year with 67 points, 95 rebounds, 23 assists and 15 steals.
She will be a key piece to the rebuilding process for the Eagles.
