Most were not in the spotlight much this past season but expect to hear from and about each one of them next season.
Taty’ana Childress- G- Junior- Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy
Sometimes a change of scenery does players a world of good both for their game and their attitude and that has been the case with this player. After two years in another program she transferred here and her game has shown that she made the right decision. She is a crafty left-hander who can get to the rim and finish and also has developed a nice shooting touch from mid-range and from 3 point range. She is athletic which enables her to push the ball in transition and she sees the floor well so she finds open teammates. She is also a good defender especially on the ball and she anticipates passes that lead to steals and deflections which she turns into points at the other end. Her average of 14 points a game proves she can score when needed but she also has the other important skills needed to succeed at the next level. She was selected to the All-Conference team as a junior this year and with her continued improvement expect it not to be her last award.
Murphy Andrews-5’6”- F- Junior- RJ Reynolds High School
Sometimes for the best of the team some players have to play out of position and that is the case here. Her height and size suggest she should be playing guard but she plays the forward position but this does not hamper her it just adds to her versatility. She has the skills to play both as she is tough and works hard inside battling against players taller than her but she holds her own by knowing how to get in position and her roll up your sleeves and go to work attitude. Even as an undersized forward she was able to average 5 rebounds a game that is a testament to her work ethic. But don’t sleep on her guard skills where she is a deadly standstill 3 point shooter with great form and accuracy. Her inside prowess and shooting led her to average 10 points a game and nothing suggests that she won’t average more next season. Her ball handling is improving and as that progresses she will attract more interest from the next level as a guard.
Anna Hubert- G- Junior- Vandalia Christian High School
Basketball is a team sport and sometimes the team’s success does not reflect the players on the team and that is the case here. On a sub 500 team she has managed to continue to improve and to sharpen her skills. She has developed into a quality guard that can play either position, she handles the ball well and is a skilled passer, she can score in close and shoots the ball well from mid-range and from deep. These skills led to her 11 points a game average even when other teams keyed in on her she managed to find ways to score. She is a good defender who can also defend both guard spots and her understanding of how to defend enabled her to average 4 rebounds and 2 steals a game. With her developed skill set and another year of experience behind her expect big things from her next season.
Taylor Haynes- 5’9”- G- Junior- Northern Guilford High School
She has been patiently waiting her turn and working on her game on a team that is a 20 plus wins a season and a regular participant in the state playoffs and that hard work has started to show for her with her outstanding junior season. She has great size for a guard and is comfortable at either spot. She excels in transition where she can showcase her ball-handling skills and her accurate and sometimes fancy passing skills. In the half-court she is a team player and can organize her squad and get the ball to the right teammate but she can also move over to the shooting guard spot where she moves extremely well without the ball and is an amazing standstill 3 point shooter especially from the baseline. All these skills bode well for her at the next level. This season was her best as she filled up the stat sheet averaging 9 points, 2 assists, 4 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game solid numbers that will no doubt increase next season and have college recruiters making their way to see her play.
Kiandre Brown- 6’3”- F, C- Junior- Winston Salem Christian National High School
One of the most improved players in the area is hard to miss as she stands 6’3”. With only a few years of organized basketball experience she has made tremendous strides. She is definitely one of the most athletic and agile 6 footers I have seen. She runs the floor extremely well and is quick off her feet which makes her an asset on both ends of the floor. She has learned how to post well and has great footwork and hands with a soft touch for a big. This led to her averaging 11 points this season but expect with another year under her belt that this number will increase next season. On the defensive end her athletic ability really shines as she is quick enough to get to any shooters that venture into the lane and her quickness off her feet means she blocks a lot of shots and changes even more, it also makes her a rebounding machine. She has made tremendous progress and I am sure along the way attracted many of college coaches attention and rightfully so if her progress up to now is any indication she will only get better and will be a special player at the next level.
