Tiona Wright- 5’4”- G- Sophomore- Carver High School
One of the most explosive and competitive guards in the Triad area plays her ball at Carver High School. Don’t let her size fool you as she plays the game harder and with more intensity than players taller than her. She excels in the open court and taking the ball to the rim which enables her to use her tremendous quickness both with the ball and without. She finishes at the rim better than guards bigger than her and she manages this with slick ball handling and great body control as well as an array of shots in the lane. She was able to use these skills to average 9 points a game this season and with an improving outside shot expect this to be higher next season. Her defensive prowess is just as impressive as she puts full court on the ball pressure on all guards she defends and she has quick feet and hands which led to many steals and deflections that she quickly turned into points at the other end. She was recognized as an All-Conference selection this season and rightfully so after the season she had. Now heading into her junior year expect big things from her and remember the name you will hear it a lot this season.
Anayah Underwood- 5’6”- G, F- Sophomore- Dudley High School
Another player that is built to play this game and play it well. She is super athletic with excellent length that allows her to not only cover distance but also cover space. She has quick hands and feet and runs the floor extremely well. She is awesome in transition where she finishes strong in the paint around the rim and is working on her outside shot. Her basketball smarts is advanced for someone with her experience and that will bode well for her heading into her last two years. The team she plays for emphasizes pressure defense and is full of athletes so she fits in and plays a great role on the defensive end either in man or pressing defenses where she can use her physical gifts to her advantage. A player whose blessed with speed and size and traits made for this game and then add to that a sound basketball IQ now you can start to understand why you will hear more about her next season.
Jahmaria Miles- 5’11”- F- Sophomore- Walter Williams Burlington High School
Definitely the most physically gifted player on this list she has the size but more importantly she has the solid build to go along with it but it doesn’t hamper her ability to move nor her quickness. Because of this she is going to attract a lot of attention due to the fact that she is versatile and can play and defend just about all positions on the floor and that alone makes her a valuable asset on any team. What really stood out is her ability to pass the basketball at her size, she finds open teammates with ease and makes the correct and on-time pass more times than not a valuable trait for a player with her size. She is comfortable in the post as well as outside and continues to develop her offensive talents and as it improves so too will her stock. She already is solid in transition and excels on the defensive end whether defending on the perimeter or in the paint she is solid. With a hard-working off-season expect her to come back next season with her weaknesses sharpened and ready to make a real impact on the Triad and NC basketball scene.
Haley Hill- G- Sophomore- Burlington Christian Academy
Sometimes playing at a small private school or academy that is not a power program can mean you get less media and attention but it has been proven time and time again that if you have game you will be found and that will be the same for this player by the time she becomes a senior. It is her ability to score the ball that has started to peak the interest of coaches at the next level and gotten her some attention. She shoots the ball well from mid range and is learning to shoot the 3 point shot better and with her shooing form it will come. Her shooting saw her average over 8 points a game and enabled her to have quite a few double figure games as well as a 20+ point game. She is sound fundamentally and it shows in the way she plays the game and in her understanding of the game. With her work ethic expect her to use this offseason to work on her game and when the season starts expect her to have her best season yet and that will lead to the type of attention she deserves.
Abby Mulry- 6’0”- F- Sophomore- Northern Guilford High School
My true diamond in the rough who is the real sleeper of this list has many reasons that I expect her to be a legit big by the time she finishes her high school career. Here are some things that are working in her favor to assist with her development, she is already a legit six-footer and you can’t teach height, she plays for a powerhouse program that has produced many top college prospects so they know how to develop players, playing at such a program means she will be playing against top competition in the conference and state playoffs and that along will improve her game finally her dedication to get better. She already has improved so much just this season and with more game time and experience her progress will accelerate. She already has good footwork and hands for a big and is learning to play big on both ends of the floor in her limited game time. So with the work, she will surely put in over the summer and in the off-season expect her to be in line for the most improved big not only in the Triad but maybe in the state, stay tuned.
Other players to Watch
Saniya Arant-5’8”- G- Sophomore- Grimsley High School
An athletic guard with great build and quickness. The more she plays the better she will get, built for the game and is learning quickly. Good defender.
Madalynn McKinney- 5’10”- G,F- Sophomore- Forsyth Home Educators
A versatile player that can play both the guard and forward position. Excels defensively where she can guard multiple positions and managed to block more than 1 shot a game and pulled down over 3 rebounds a game all in limited game time.
Jamera Shaw- 5’7”- G- Sophomore- Walter Williams Burlington High School
A quality guard that is improving quickly and is sound fundamentally. Has solid handles and passes well the more experience she gains the better she gets already has solid shooting form that will only get better with time. Look for her to use her quickness more and look for her to be one of the solid guards in the Triad next season.
