Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2023’s who need to be on your radar.
Riley Batta Riley Batta 5'10" | PF South Central Calhoun | 2023 State IA – South Central Calhoun
New faces took to the court for South Central Calhoun this past winter, and one had quite the impact right from the start.
Freshman Riley Batta Riley Batta 5'10" | PF South Central Calhoun | 2023 State IA led the Titans to 15 wins and a spot in the regional quarterfinals, finishing her first varsity season as the leading scorer.
Batta, one of four underclassman starters for South Central Calhoun, led the team with 282 total points. She made over 45 percent of her field goals, sank 15 three-pointers and added 119 rebounds, 56 steals, 49 assists and 11 blocks.
Annika Nelson – Belmond-Klemme
Belmond-Klemme pushed towards a winning record this past year, and the Broncos will lean on the likes of Annika Nelson to do that next season.
Nelson, a member of the Class of 2023, averaged just under nine points per game, shooting over 30 percent from the field and deep. She added 52 rebounds, 35 assists and 22 steals to her line.
Isabella Munoz – West Central Valley
With a very youth-dominated roster, West Central Valley put together a winning season with high hopes for the future around the program.
Isabella Munoz was one of those who started nearly every single game, scoring 84 points. However, it was what Munoz did outside of just scoring, posting a team-leading 65 assists with 62 rebounds and 50 steals – which also led the Wildcats.
Kylee Schleisman Kylee Schleisman 5'4" | PG South Central Calhoun | 2023 State IA – South Central Calhoun
Riley Batta Riley Batta 5'10" | PF South Central Calhoun | 2023 State IA was not the only newcomer to the starting lineup for South Central Calhoun this past year, as Kylee Schleisman Kylee Schleisman 5'4" | PG South Central Calhoun | 2023 State IA jumped right into the deep end.
Schleisman averaged just under eight points per game, making a team-high 29 three-pointers. She finished the year with 68 rebounds, 60 assists and 39 steals.
Mary Bontrager – East Sac County
It was a slow progression into the varsity lineup for Mary Bontrager this past year, but East Sac County made sure to keep her right there when they needed her.
Bontrager, a freshman, saw action in 21 games and started six of them. She finished with 60 points, 42 rebounds, 36 assists and 12 steals, making 10 three-pointers.
With a pair of seniors graduating, more will be expected out of Bontrager with those returning around her.
