A theme that came across this time was dual sports athletes who combine skills from other sports to their advantage when it comes to playing basketball. Allie Hueckman, Eastern Washington basketball signee, is a hyperactive three-sport athlete for Burns whose talents translate all across the board. Kaiah Fisher is a bruiser down lot but also happens to be an exceptional thrower for Hidden Valley. Kelsey Fausett doubles as a 400 meter runner and javelin thrower for Astoria but also is a lock down defender. Chevelle Boyd for De La Salle North Catholic is a volleyball and hardwood star for the Knights who made a huge impact this season. Here are the Small School Standouts Part 2.
Allie Hueckman 2021 5’10” SG Burns HS – The three sport athlete for Burns is an exceptional athlete whose skills from volleyball and track and field transfer onto the hardwood as an active, aware athlete that is constantly trying to make the next play. She is a tall, quick, and agile guard that aggressively gets to the rim and gracefully steps around defenders to rise up at the rim and finish. Defensively, she is always on the prowl as she anticipates passes and immediately turns the corner to start the transition, where she has excellent court vision and a great touch to make great but simply passes upcourt. She has an excellent shot as well that she hits in stride.
Kaiah Fisher 2021 6’0” PF Hidden Valley HS – Kaish is a big, physical post who likes to get the ball deep in the paint, and feel out her defender and maneuver accordingly. She has great patience and footwork and has a number of counter moves and finishes well with the left hand. Her trademark game this season came in a record breaking way against Klamath Union in a goliath performance of 37 points and 25 rebounds, both school marks as she connected on 14 out of 27 field goals. She is a big, strong power forward and this can be seen from the fact that she is also a prolific thrower during the spring, as she placed second in the 2019 4A OSAA Track and Field championships in the discus and shotput.
Kelsey Fausett 2021 5’7” SF Astoria HS – Kelsey is a blue collar wing for Astoria who makes her presence widely known on the defensive end, as she rattles defenders and quickly asserts herself to the ball to catalyze the fast break. This won her the Cowapa League Defensive Players of the Year and she also used her talents to break out onto the track and field scene in Oregon as well. In 2019 as a sophomore, she made it to the 4A OSAA State Championships in the 400 and the javelin. Kelsey is fearless going to the rim and has a nice mid-range jump shot move that catches her opposition off balance.
Chevelle Boyd 2021 SF De La Salle North Catholic – Chevelle is an athletic dual sport athlete for De La Salle North Catholic who also specializes in volleyball. She is a fluid athlete that uses her size, length, and jumping skills to rebound and finish around the rim, as she is athletic enough to do against other players. She is defensively ignited as a rim protector who will challenge you and has timely jumping skills. She had a spirited performance in the 3A State Playoffs in a loss against eventual champion Clatskanie, as she tallied 22 points and 11 rebounds. Her efforts this season won her Second Team 3A All State.
